We have taught career courses to students in numerous universities in the United States, as well as in Canada, Japan, Denmark, Portugal, England, and Spain, to mention just a few. Wherever students are interested in learning about career development theory and practice, we are eager to go! In each instance, however, we not only teach students about career development interventions but students also teach us. The idea for this book began in response to student requests (pleas) for a career development textbook that was readable, useful, and interesting. These are high, but reasonable, expectations. These expectations served as our guiding principles as we composed the chapters of this book.

To make the book more readable, most chapters include case studies. Our goal is to help readers connect chapter content with the lives of people represented in the cases. Although the cases are, for the most part, fictional, they reflect the career concerns of people with whom we have worked as career counselors in schools, in community settings, and in higher education. Thus, we are indebted to our clients, in addition to our students, for teaching us about the career development process. We seek to share these experiences with the readers of this book.

Another goal is to convey to our readers the deep respect and long-term commitment we have for career development theory and practice. We emphasize this goal in Chapter 1. As we note in the book, there are few things more personal than a career choice, and we were cognizant of this fact as we wrote each chapter. Making career decisions involves deciding how we will spend one of the most precious commodities we have—our time on Earth. We realize that these decisions are often very difficult and overwhelming. Thus, we draw upon the work of our colleagues in the field to present readers with "state-of-the-art" career theory and practice. However, the current situation evolved from the past contributions of many leaders in the field. We acknowledge their important foundational contributions in Chapter 1.

Although we cover a wide variety of theoretical perspectives in the book (especially in Chapters 2 and 3), we emphasize that careers develop over time. A decision point in one's career development is just that, a point in time at which one makes decisions based on previous and current career development experiences. Although knowing how to help people at these important points in their career development is crucial, career practitioners can also intervene proactively in the lives of children, adolescents, and adults in ways that facilitate positive career development prior to career crises occurring. Being able to provide assistance in both instances is critical.

We are especially concerned that career development theory and practice be inclusive. Constructing culturally inclusive career development interventions should be standard practice within the field. Unfortunately, this has not been the case. In part because of their historical context, career theories and practices focused primarily on the career experiences of European-American middle-class males. Although we devote a chapter to diverse populations (Chapter 4), throughout the book we also address the need for inclusive career interventions. Our cases also tend to highlight the career experiences of clients from diverse backgrounds. We think both approaches (i.e., having a single chapter devoted to the topic and infusing diversity throughout the book) are needed to begin to more adequately address the career development needs of all people.

The need to provide clients with culturally sensitive career interventions provides an important foundation for discussing career counseling interventions in Chapter 5 and career assessment approaches in Chapter 6. We provide information pertaining to career counseling process and outcomes that reflects the most recent work within the field. We also provide career information, resources, and website references (Chapter 7 and 8) that represent important aspects of the career development process. We highlight the essential considerations in designing and implementing career development programs in Chapter 9. Finally, we highlight developmental approaches to providing career assistance in the schools, community settings, and higher education in Chapter 10 through Chapter 13.

Of course, the desire to engage in ethical practice is also a standard in the field. However, there are many challenges confronting career practitioners. Web-based services such as career counseling and career assessment, the possibility of dual relationships, and theories with deeply rooted value sets present challenges to practitioners as they engage in ethical practice. Thus, we address many of these current ethical challenges in Chapter 14. This is one of the few career development textbooks with a chapter devoted to ethical practice.

Finally, we emphasize the importance of engaging in the ongoing evaluation of career services. This is important for improving service delivery. However, when resources are limited, as they are in many situations, the need for both accountability and the ability to demonstrate effectiveness are great. We present readers with important topics related to the evaluation of career services in Chapter 15.

To make the book even more useful to readers, we use a framework developed by the National Career Development Association (NCDA). Specifically, we use the NCDA's (1997) career development competencies, to guide us in the identification of chapter topics. These competencies appear in the appendix at the end of the book and at the following website address: http://www.ncda.org/about/polccc.html#career. Please note that in the book's appendix we identify the chapters that are most relevant to each competency category.

The rationale for using the competencies is that if these competencies are deemed the requisite knowledge and skills for providing career development interventions, then we should help readers learn this information and develop these skills. Here again, we also hope that the case studies facilitate the learning process. The Companion Website for the book also contributes to knowledge and skill acquisition, and we hope that readers find this resource to be a valuable tool. The Companion Website will be updated periodically, so we encourage readers to return to it at regular intervals for up-to-date information and web links.

This is not a new textbook it is a photocopy

This is a photocopy reprint of a very good text book however after speaking with Prentice hall publishing in regard to the horrible quality of the photographs in the text, they are completely illegible. I learned that this book is no longer in print and that this is a photocopy reprint. it is worth $30.00 at best not full price. do your self a favor and look for a better price. class has already started I'm stuck with mine don't get stuck with yours.

Great book; extremely useful and easy to navigate

Great book; extremely useful and easy to navigate, but the binding was awful. The book was nearly about to fall apart when I first got it. I am just glad they accepted my return when I was done with it.

Excellent Resource for the PE EXAM

Norton is an awesome resource. For students going to college it may seem overwhelming. But it is the MOST up to date text on the market on the subject of Machine Design. While taking the PE exam I compared Shigley vs Norton on information, and Norton had all the answers. The author has done a monumental job in bringing the vast spectrum of Machine Design in a very well composed book. I have yet to come across a resource like Norton. In fact, I recommend this book to practicing engineers. Almost every section of the book has real world value. Its worth having on the shelf. I was always into Shigley but Norton is more in line with industry practice as opposed to academic excercises as presented by Shigley.

An great book for teaching and for reference

I am in the solid mechanics group of the Mechanical Engineering dept. at my university. I have taught Machine Design I and II from this book (3rd and 4th ed.) for 6 semesters and I am very happy with the book. It is clear that the author has actual machine design experience. The book is easy to teach from and the students like it. Each chapter has a lot of problems in the back, some stand-alone for that chapter, others that tie in with previous chapters.

Concepts are presented in a fairly straightforward manner. Derivations are given where applicable. There are numerous examples, and they are usually quite relevant to actual machine parts. Each chapter has a very long, thorough design example at the end, which incorporates the current chapter and concepts from previous chapters.

I have noticed that almost all of my students keep this book after they are done with the course, and use it as a reference for their capstone design projects.

The book is a tad bit pricey, but it has a lot of content, and it is very useful as a reference. I highly recommend it for instructional use and for use as a personal reference.

Interesting, but not understandable

A student five years above me did not like this book. A student four years above me also did not like this book. A student two years above me did not like it either. A student a year above me hated this book. And what a surprise, I didn't like it either. See the pattern?
There are several reasons why so many people dislike this book. First of all, the style of the writing is very roundabout and philosophical. If you're reading this book out of interest, it can be interesting. But when you actually have to solve the problems in the back of the chapter by the next day, this indirect approach can be annoying, since you never really know what you really need to know.
The first few chapters based on the First and Second Law are written well, compared to the rest of the book. Chapter 9 is a horrible chapter (on Mixtures) with 200+ Equations in the chapter. Not that having 200+ equations is bad in itself, but the way the chapter is written, you have no idea what equations are important.
Chapter 10 on Classical Stat Mech is also very difficult to read. If you've studied Stat Mech before, it may not be too bad. For someone who's never seen Stat Mech, the chapter takes hours to read, and after you've read it, you still have absolutely no idea what the book is trying to say.
As for buying this book, if you're really into thermodynamics and you really love and understand it, you might like this book. For a professor, it might be a refreshing read. For normal people who have to buy this book, since it's required for a class -- I feel your pain. Do the world a favor -- once you're done with the book, give it away to someone younger who also needs to suffer through it. I guarantee you that once you're done with it, you'll never pick it up again (and find yourself picking up Smith and Van Ness instead).

I wish there was an option to give this negative stars. Or at least zero.
If you think this book is good, then it is because of one of two things. Either: 1.) You have NOT HAD to read this book (i.e., for a graduate course in chemical thermo), or 2.) You are a sadistic professor who likes to see their students suffer. There is nothing here of any value. The problems are near impossible to solve, and the text does not explain terms at all. The so called "postulatory approach" provides zero insight into this subject. If you are looking for a text to learn thermo, then keep looking. If you have to buy this book, you have my prayers. If you have to use this book for a class, then I would HIGHLY suggest that you pick up Sandler's "Chemical and Engineering Thermodynamics." You will use it 10X more then Tester's text.

Terrible book, difficult read

I have taken 3 years of thermodynamics with different books. This book being the worst! I felt I 'delearned' after trying to read some of the chapters. The early chapters were good in explaining the basis of thermodynamics. The rest of the book is way too general, the equations are derived for extremely general cases and it makes trying to relate to real world situations near impossible. The problems at the end of the chapters are not easy and there are NO good examples within the chapters. The problems are written poorly and often open to interpretation so students can get 5 or 6 different answers to one problem. If you are forced to use this book I would recommend that you do NOT read the chapters, only work the problems. Buy a different book to study thermodynamics from.

About the Author

Mary Beirne-Smith is an associate professor of special education at The University of Alabama. Her previous experience includes general and special education classroom teaching and public school administration. Her reserach interests concern academic interventions for students with disabilities served in inclusive settings and collaboration between general and special education teachers. She earned her M.Ed. and Ed.D. from the University of Virginia.

 

Shannon Hill is Director of Education and Research at The Baddour Center, a residential and vocational service provider for adults with intellectual disabilities located in Senatobia, Mississippi.  In this role, she oversees psychological and behavioral services, staff development, research, and student placements.  Her research interests include the development of useful educational and psychological interventions, innovative methods of staff training, and family service needs.  She earned her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Mississippi, and has served as adjunct professor of psychology, counselor education, and special education at the University of Memphis and the University of Mississippi.

Xeroxed paperback

I ordered this book presuming it was the harcover edition. It wasn't. In fact, not only was it paperback, but the pages were PHOTOCOPIED from the original. ALl of the photos and graphics look terrible. It is missing pages here and there, in the body, appendices, and index.

The book itself is a great book. Architectural Acoustics for dummies essentially. Just don't pay $80+ for a cheap photocopy.

Great Reference Book

This is my go-to reference book for room acoustics of large rooms*. Noise control, vibration and audio are lightly covered, but the focus is on room acoustics design of theaters, auditoria and concert halls.

I have the photo-copy edition (which is the only edition available for quite some time). The photographs in the book are not very good, but all of the other figures and text are perfectly clear. I haven't found any missing pages in mine either. It would be nice to have a hard cover with color photos (or at least high quality b/w photos) but the information is what makes this book valuable.

*Of course Egan's is great too, but I find Egan's to be a better self-teaching book for those just getting into acoustics, and this to be a better application book. If you are trying to choose, I recommend getting both.

Best for architects

I used this book for several years in my course of Architectural Acoustics and Noise Control for Architecture students. The book covers the basics of sound to applications of acoustics of real life, like speech auditoriums, theaters and symphonic rooms. The book covers also noise and vibration control and some topics of audio in a very simple way. Maybe some "engineering" or "math" oriented people will feel the book too simple, but the information is very valuable for the architecture student or practicing architect. By the way Egan's book in also highly recommended.
