About the Author
Matthias Nicola is a Senior Software Engineer for DB2 pureXML at IBM’s Silicon Valley Lab. His work focuses on all aspects of XML in DB2, including XQuery, SQL/XML, XML storage, indexing, and performance. Matthias also works closely with customers and business partners, assisting them in the design, implementation, and optimization of XML solutions. Matthias has published more than a dozen articles on various XML topics (see www.matthiasnicola.de) and is a frequent speaker at DB2 conferences. Prior to joining IBM, Matthias worked on data warehousing performance for Informix Software. He received his doctorate in computer science from the Technical University of Aachen, Germany.
Pav Kumar-Chatterjee has worked with DB2 since 1991 on DB2 for z/OS and since 2000 on DB2 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows. He is currently employed by IBM as a technical sales specialist for Information Management in the United Kingdom. He has helped customers implement the XML Extender product with DB2 V8 and has presented on DB2 and XML in the United Kingdom and around Europe.

A must-read for All XML database developers

The DB2 pureXML Cookbook is one of the most comprehensive technical books I've ever read on any topic.
It not only covers DB2's pureXML implementation of the SQL/XML, XPath and XQuery in great depth but it also provides a wealth of detail on the underlying standards as well. Therefore I would recommend this not only to DB2 people using XML, but to anyone using XML in a database environment.
The examples, of which there are hundreds, are probably the best feature of this book. I find myself dipping into it for help over and over again and finding something that I can easily modify for my own particular use case. It is obvious that the authors have extensive experience not only of XML and DB2 pureXML but of how these technologies are used in the "real world".
My advice to you ... buy it and save yourselves hours of effort in your XML development effort.

I'v had the opportunity to hear Dr. Matthias Nicola speak about DB2 PureXML on several occasions and there's no doubt that he is an expert on the subject. This book confirms that.
The DB2 pureXML Cookbook is the most comprehensive and authorative technical book that I have found on the subject. It is a "must have" for anyone wishing to take advantage of all that pureXML has to offer in a DB2 environment. In addition to describing the benefits of using pureXML, it covers everything from designing and managing XML storage objects to querying XML data with SQL and XQuery. I highly recommend it!

It focuses on using XML data in the process of implementing DB2, and provides fine technical coverage on a range of issues, from identifying inefficient XML queries and updating XML documents to importing and replicating XML data and optimizing its performance. Very highly recommended!
