Insightful, necessarily imperfect

I teach college history and so have had the opportunity to read many survey texts. Overall, I like Stavrianos' work better than the omnipresent Spielvogel, or Upshur's text published by Cengage. My impression is that Stavrianos, to a lesser degree than McNeil, distills patterns from Global History and escapes disintegrating into a morass of miscellany. In other words, a forest emerges--rather than an endless plethora of trees. Arguably, distinguishing patterns invites the accusation of abstraction and generalization; but this is a risk worth taking in my opinion.
Making an intelligible whole of even one area's history is quite a challenge--so preserving a coherent whole whilst not sacrificing too much detail or sharpness of the ENTIRE WORLD represents a daunting task that deserves the indulgence of readers. Sometimes Stravrianos gives me pause--because in certain areas I distinguish what are either simplifications or mistakes, and it makes me wonder if he consciously suppresses the 'granularity' of the facts in order to 'smoothe' the narrative, or if he really didn't know any better?
The two examples of this are his description of the Great Wall of China, which would make a casual student assume that it was a completely new construction due to Qin Shih Huang--even though it was actually an amalgam of new and pre-existing fortifications. The foregoing is probably more of a parsing criticism; more serious though, may be his rather summary (and somewhat unconvincing) discussion of why the Ottoman Empire, despite its formidable strength, was rapidly outstripped by the upstart European kingdoms.
Overall, the text is good, but should be supplemented by added detail via lecture (or further reading)
