Mistitled

I bought this book hoping to gain some insight into the social nature of education in order to back up some research that I am currently conducting on the Japanese education system. However, I was a bit disappointed that this book covers social and political issues in regards to the American education system. If you're interested in that kind of information, then this might be of use to you, but if you're looking for a book on the sociology of education, then this is not it. It should be retitled "The Sociology of the American Education System". Another complaint is that the writing style is not very academic--what you might expect from a high school AP course or perhaps a community college course. I really recommend trying another textbook if you want in depth analysis of the sociology of education.

This book didn't quite cater to the needs of my Sociology programme at school. I did use it on occasion and found it to be a good alternative. I wouldn't recommend it as your main Sociology reference though.

Dry but great appendix

This book is very dry and a horrible read. The best thing about the book is the appendix. The appendix is great! It includes several pages for converting Assembly to binary. It also includes several pages on Assembly language commmands and how they are used. The book is definitely not worth its cost, but if you are forced to buy it as a textbook, it may not be bad reference book to keep at the end of the semester.

About the Author
Dr. H. Douglas Brown, Series Editor - Professor Emeritus of the MA-TESOL program at San Francisco State University. A past president of TESOL and recipient of the James E. Alatis Award for Distinguished Service, he has authored many books and articles and is a frequent presenter at world conferences. Before coming to SFSU, Dr. Brown was Professor and Director of the Division of ESL at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, and previous to that, a faculty member at the University of Michigan, where he also served as Acting Director of the English Language Institute for three years. Dr. Brown was the 1980-81 President of International TESOL. In 2001, he was the recipient of TESOL's James E. Alatis Award for Distinguished Service. In 2005, he was honored to receive the Distinguished Service Award from SFSU's Office of International Programs. His numerous professional publications include: Principles of Language Learning and Teaching (5th ed.); Teaching by Principles: An Interactive Approach to Language Pedagogy (3rd ed.); Language Assessment: Principles and Classroom Practices (2nd ed.); and Readings on Second Language Acquisition (co-edited with Susan Gonzo). He has co-authored several ESL textbooks: Strategies for Success, Challenges, the ESL basal series Vistas, and Voyages (international). From 1970-1978, Dr. Brown served as Editor of the journal Language Learning. Linda Laneis a senior faculty member in the American Language Program of Columbia University. In addition to the Focus on Pronunciation series, she is also the author of Tips for Teaching Pronunciation, Pearson Longman, 2010. She served as director of the Columbia University Humanities Media Center for 10 years and coordinated Columbia's TESOL Certificate Program for another 10 years, teaching classes in Applied Phonetics and Pronunciation Teaching and Introduction to Second Language Acquisition. She received her Ed.D. in Applied Linguistics from Teachers College, Columbia University, her M.A. in Linguistics from Yale University, and her B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Washington, Seattle.

Super-practical!

Most books on pronunciation fall into two camps: textbooks with lots of activities and exercises aimed at nonnative speakers, or teacher resource books that tend to be highly theoretical and descriptive but don't offer much in the way of useful activities for the classroom. Thankfully, this book really breaks the mold. I borrowed a copy from another teacher, intending to copy just a few pages, but when I found myself mentally tagging virtually every page in the book, I realized that I would need to buy the whole book for myself. Never again will I scratch my head wondering how to teach any feature of NAE pronunciation in a clear and engaging way. This book is FULL of lesson ideas that are spelled out step-by-step, complete with worksheets and many, many examples. The explanations for teachers are the clearest I've ever come across. If I were allowed to have only three books to use in planning fun, interactive pronunciation classes, they would be Mark Hancock's Pronunciation Games (Cambridge Copy Collection), Martin Hewings' Pronunciation Practice Activities Book and Audio CD Pack: A Resource Book for Teaching English Pronunciation (Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers), and Linda Lane's Tips for Teaching Pronunciation: A Practical Approach (with Audio CD). The latter covers all of the features a teacher really needs to understand (specific phonemes, suprasegmentals, the works) while also converting all of that information/description into ***ready-to-be-deployed classroom activities***. That's where most teacher resource books in this particular specialty fail miserably. In fact, this teacher reference contains even more imaginative classroom activities than Lane's own textbook series Focus on Pronunciation 1 (with 2 Student Audio CDs) (2nd Edition). Usually it's the reverse: the textbooks contain all the fun activity ideas while the teacher reference books are too distant and "deep" to be of much practical day-to-day use. As a working teacher in constant need of ideas for what to do in the classroom, I know which kind of book is more valuable to me. Let the grad students and academics have all the other books about pronunciation teaching. I'll take this one--it's worth a dozen of those.

This textbook Tips for Teaching Pronunciation: A Practical Approach is a pronunciation textbook with listening and conversation practices to accompany activities. It covers the teaching of five aspects of pronunciation. It begins with a Teaching Pronunciation introduction, followed by Word Stress, Rhythm, Intonation, Consonants and Vowels. Suprasegmentals are ordered by syllable stress, rhythm, (it covers Linking Rules and Fast-Speech Blends and intonation). The phonetic alphabet is taught in the two chapters that deal with Consonants and Vowels. The phonetic alphabet is printed on the inside of the front cover. The book is focused on American English; however recognizes that there are differences in pronunciation in regional dialects. It has the customary treatment for contrasting /r/ and /l/ and also ./iy/ and /ɪ/

Each chapter begins with a warm-up discussion which leads into the teaching points for the chapter. The warm up usually uses an example of a problem of pronunciation that the chapter will address. Scattered throughout the text are more than 50 activities ranging from the beginner to advanced level. The activities are designed for either class, individual, pairs or small groups. Each activity has a description of its purpose. The textbook provides a worksheet for 24 activities. Some of the activities are used in conjunction with the CD.

This book is the pronunciation equivalency of a manual that an automobile mechanic would call a service manual. It illustrates problems and how to fix them and even how to prevent them. The variety of exercises keep the textbook interesting for the students. The CD is well organized and uses both male and female voices for the exercises. Standard American English is used in the recordings. The textbook was published in 2010 and is quite up to date. I own a copy of the textbook and find the layout, presentation style, and activities very easy to follow and useful.

this book has been haunting me for 38 years

I like the book because the author is unabashedly direct and honest in his convictions. That's what makes me dislike the thing with equal passion.

I first read Reflections on Behaviorism and Society in 1978, the year it was published. I was working as a correctional officer at a state prison and a fellow officer gave it to me to read. He thought I would find it “interesting”. I was twenty-six years old. I have no “formal education,” meaning I never went to college to study psychology or anything else. The stuff of daily life wasn’t an “experiment” to be observed, analyzed, and subsequently explained in terms of “academic theory” but rather to be lived. I was, essentially, and remain, of course, a rat in a maze. That should not suggest, however, that working men and women do not try to make sense of, things, look for answers behind the “why” that drives everything. That I might be a bit more “preoccupied” with this than many others should hint as to why the officer lent me the book in the first place. The irony of reading a book about “behavioral conditioning” that includes studies of rats in mazes while working as a prison guard should not go unnoticed.

So what drives everything is, of course, human behavior. And that same human behavior is inexorably tied to man’s physical environment. The rat in the maze has intelligence enough to know that he is in a maze. He is also intelligent enough to know that that maze has been built by other rats. That rat behavior is greatly “conditioned” by the physical reality of the maze is, I would think, a self-evident fact. Then again, rats, especially of the human variety, seem to overlook the obvious. Stating it as clearly as the author does hurts nothing.

So I read that book in ’78, my first real introduction into this specific context and consideration of human conduct and behavior. I have never forgotten how terrified I was to learn that there are really people who believe, and believe in, the ideas and potential methodologies the author wrote. It did, however, open my eyes as never before to just how much so much of my life, my own “choices and actions,” were the result of a maze constructed to control and dictate those choices and actions.

The years have passed and though I quit working in that prison before the end of ’78, I continue to watch my fellow rats in all the mazes in which we find ourselves. The rats have remained essentially the same but the maze changes constantly. I recently (August ’16) bought this book again—a near-perfect copy of the ’78 edition—simply to re-read it, hoping I had missed something, overlooked something, misunderstood something. Nope. It is as chilling in 2016 as it was in 1978.

The author has little problem with what seems to be one of Man’s oldest dreams, the creation of a perfect maze where all the rats will be happy. Men who scoff at Religions’ ideas of “heaven” seem to have little problem with the vision of a “Utopia” created by Man. The maze itself would be simple by design but there remains that damnable problem of behavior.

From the text itself:
“The problem is human behavior. How can people be induced to take the future into account? That is a question to which, I think, an analysis of behavior is relevant.”
“…the problem is to get people to act as if [emphasis in original] they were thinking about the future. All we can change are the circumstances in which people live, and we want to change them in such a way that people will behave differently. We are on safer and more promising ground if we stick to behavior.”

The author’s tacit admission is that most people are, to put it bluntly, too stupid to do the right thing, the “better” thing. Five thousand years of recorded human history suggests he is not wrong. He therefore has no interest in appealing to either their intellect or emotions. One day spent in the maze of daily life is all the confirmation needed to know that those who build and run the maze don’t give one damn about what the rats think or how they feel.

But the author and those who agree with his visions seem to begin with the presumption that all rats are equal, that the imposition and removal of “reinforcers” will eventually end with all rats exhibiting the same desired conduct and behavior. There remains, however, another self-evident fact that the author seems to have deliberately, and I think most conveniently, omitted: It is one thing to talk about human behavior in relationship to the maze but also driving that human behavior is a pesky little thing called human nature.

Putting aside any and all possible considerations of human nature in any and all possible contexts—dualities such as “good” and “evil” come to mind, as an example—human nature is, if nothing else, defined by the conflict between intellect and emotion, reason and passion, logic and intuition, and thought and feelings. Men think one thing. They feel another. And no maze can be constructed that will resolve that inner conflict. The real conflict, therefore, is not between and among the rats and the maze in which they find themselves, but rather the conflict that is this duality of their very nature.

I cannot, of course, claim to know the author’s motives and intentions. His is the stated certainty, however, that given just the right “reinforcers” entrusted to the “right” rats, the “better” rats, all the other rats will, in time, come to be “equal” in their behavior. The vision is the absence of conflict between and among the rats, i.e., happy rats. At the end of the day, however, this has far less to do with any noble and possibly altruistic notions of love and compassion for the rats in the maze but rather everything to do with the one being in control.

Again, from the text:
“Behavior modification is just the technology we need to promote the face-to-face control of people, by people, and for people and thus to reduce the scope of the centralized institutions of government and economics.”

The prison where I worked in ’78 is a “social experiment” in “controlled behavior”. The world suggested by the author is also a prison, just one minus the bars. It still has guards to control the inmates. The author simply wants to be the warden.

All protestations to the contrary, the author isn’t out to “control behavior” but rather change human nature. That takes him from being idealist (create Utopia) to the caricature of a mad scientist creating Frankenstein’s monster to playing God. Eden, of course, as fact or fiction, is always a failed experiment. Men, of course, hold God responsible when it is a literal Eden in question. Mazes built by men to control rats, however, never hold themselves responsible but always blame the rats.

Mine has been a lifetime of watching the author’s visions (and those who agree with him) be put into practice. It, too, is a failed experiment. The maze keeps being redesigned and rat behavior is increasingly controlled at blinding speeds and yet the rats are angrier and far less happy than I have ever known them to be. And at the end of the day, it always reduces to that pesky rat/human nature and the simple fact that one bunch of rats/humans are convinced of their superiority over the rest of the rats/humans and they should be in control of everything.

The author should have spent less time studying rats in mazes and more watching gerbils on a wheel. He might would have had a much better understanding of both human behavior and human nature.

So yes, I recommend the book. Then again, it seems this particular title has not been re-published since '78. The subject seems to be one that quickly and easily divides people into those who disagree with those who agree. I agree with many of his observations and conclusions about people, society, and human conduct and behavior. I could not disagree more vehemently with his "vision" of how and why to build a better maze in the hopes of having better and happier rats.

Buy a different book

This book exemplifies the the way a book should not be written. The examples, writing techniques and homework problems in this book are extremely difficient. Numerical mistakes seem to be everywhere in this book. The examples are far from real world application. Very little theory about reinforced concrete is in this book. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

Book has far too many errors

This book has some useful information. However, like all of Dr. Nawy's books, it is very poorly written and contains far too many errors to be considered a useful text. For reinforced concrete, MacGregor (4th edition) is a much better investment. For prestressed concrete, try Collins & Mitchell.

This book portrays concrete design in a cookbook fashion with little emphisis on actually understanding the material. The explinations that are given are wordy and not clear. While this book might be considered a good refrence book, I would not recomend it for students.

Glenn Hubbard policymaker, professor, and researcher.

R.Glenn Hubbard is the Dean and Russell L. Carson Professor of Finance and Economics in the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University and Professor of Economics in Columbia’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences. He is also a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and a director of Automatic Data Processing, Black Rock Closed-End Funds, Dex Media, Duke Realty, KKR Financial Corporation, and Ripplewood Holdings. He received his Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University in 1983. From 2001—2003, he served as Chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, and from 1991—1993, he was Deputy Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Treasury Department. Glenn Hubbard’s fields of specialization are public economics, financial markets and institutions, corporate finance, macroeconomics, industrial organization, and public policy. He is the author of more than 90 articles in leading journals, including the American Economic Review, Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Political Economy, Journal of Public Economics, Quarterly Journal of Economics, RAND Journal of Economics, and Review of Economics and Statistics. His research has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Bureau of Economic Research, and numerous private foundations.

Anthony Patrick O’Brien is a professor of economics at Lehigh University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1987. He has taught principles of economics for more than 15 years, in both large sections and small honors classes. He received the Lehigh University Award for Distinguished Teaching. He was formerly the director of the Diamond Center for Economic Education and was named a Dana Foundation Faculty Fellow and Lehigh Class of 1961 Professor of Economics. He has been a visiting professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the Graduate School of Industrial Administration at Carnegie Mellon University. Anthony O’Brien’s research has dealt with such issues as the evolution of the U.S. automobile industry, the sources of U.S. economic competitiveness, the development of U.S. trade policy, the causes of the Great Depression, and the causes of black—white income differences. His research has been published in leading journals, including the American Economic Review, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking, Industrial Relations, and the Journal of Economic History. His research has been supported by grants from government agencies and private foundations. In addition to teaching and writing, Anthony O’Brien also serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Socio-economics.

Good starting point for anatomy/physio info

Martini et.al gives excellent breakdowns on anatomy/phys. issues in this text. There are plenty of full color diagrams andthe lab accompany book is excellent to visualize anatomical elements: there are actually photos of a real human dissection. This text is essential for anyone going into a health care/human science related field.

Good Textbook for Anatomy and Physiology Students

I was assigned this book both for my college anatomy and physiology I and anatomy and physiology II classes. I was a little intimidated by the sylabus for the course---muslces, innervations, insertions, origins. I then started to read this textbook and I found that anatomy and physiology wasn't as hard as I thought. However, this textbook is filled with a lot of information---CNS, PNS, digestive system, axons, etc. I didn't really know what to study until I got the following which is on amazon:
Key Facts for Anatomy and Physiology by Patrick Leonardi
This study guide showed me the key topics and high-yield test items to study, for my college A and P exams. A few friends of mine who are pre-med majors told me about this study guide and how it helped them. My advice is to get both books. It is better than taking A and P over again.

A Great Book for many reasons

I am in medical school and although the Martini text does not substitute as a medical textbook, it does have great "cartoon" pictures that help me to visualize difficult biochemical concepts. For those who learn by visualizing what is happening, I would highly recommend this book. Once again, I do not use this as a primary book now, but when I took Anatomy and Physiology at college, I read this book cover to cover. It is much easier to read than other textbooks, and Martini does a very good job of combining medical illnesses/problems with the textbook material.

Not bad, but too much material to cover

This book is part of the Prentice Hall History of Music Series, which covers Western music from the Middle Ages through the 20th century, and also has a couple of non-Western music books.

At first glance I thought this book had the potential to be pretty specialized, but I forgot about the explosion of music in the U.S. during the 20th century. When you include "Classical" music, Jazz, Broadway, and Rock, you can imagine how diluted this book actually is.

Because of so little focus, I thought the strongest part of the book was the opening sections on music in the Colonial and Federal eras, including such composers as William Billings. Once the book approaches the 20th century, however, it really becomes too broad.

I really liked the bibliographical notes at the end of each chapter. Because Hitchcock is unable to say much of anything on each subject, the main value of this book is using as a launching point for further study. Hitchcock's bibliographical resources on where to find more information are valuable.

This book works well for the above purpose, but this book would not work well as a textbook at all, as some other books in this series have been used. Although it's not particularly engrossing, it can be used to complement your musical interests in music from the U.S.

Fantastic!

Fantastic condition and I don't believe it has ever been read. The library cover makes it more durable, which is great with graduate school.
