About the Author

D.M. AUSLANDER is Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. His research interests include automatic control system design, mini-microcomputer system bioengineering, modeling and simulation of dynamic systems, and process control. He is co-author of Mechatronics: Mechanical System Interfacing (Prentice Hall) and Real-Time Software for Implementation of Feedback Control.

 

J.R. RIDGELY is Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, where he teaches mechanical design and mechatronics. He is co-author of Real-Time Software for Implementation of Feedback Control.

 

J.D. RINGGENBERG holds a Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.

My weapon of choice

Little could I have imagine that this book would become my bread and butter once I reached industry. The task and state type implementation of a controllers and the necessary software components to accommodate communication to items like sensors, user interfaces, supervisor controls, etc. is indispensable to actually getting a complex system to work. I took ME 230 from Auslander, and I must say that if I didn't, I would not be employed today.

I know the professor Auslander and he's brilliant.

I bought this book to learn controls and it's not really intended for that.

It does make a very good reference book however and has some good examples. I used it in my later courses when I was programming 3-axis robots.

I needed this book for two history classes so I bought the two volumes in one book and although it is heavier it was a better deal than buying each seperate. It is unlike any other history textbook I have read. It is detailed and written more as a story than informative textbook. Great for readers.

unfortunate

It is unfortunate that I am forced to use this book for a history course. I have a general interest in History, and find this book to be a biased, opinionated, and completely lacking in historical data pertinent to the birth of this great nation. Don't get me wrong, it will tell you Columbus "hit the high seas in 1492" but it is very vague to the onset of how this country came about. Even more so vague about the part that Columbus had to beg for the money to set sail. He didn't just hop a boat to get here. It generally references "pilgrims" and "indians" and I personally feel the information is the biased opinion and interpretation of the author. I am in my middle ages, I have studied history and historical events, and already don't like my class that hasn't even started...just because of this book. I can't help but to think, "no wonder this generation is unaware of the strength and great freedoms of this country." This book is SERIOUSLY lacking in detail of historical events of our founding fathers.
Here is an example... and I quote verbatim from the book, (pg 3 the very beginning) "It reminds us that history is not fixed; facts change, as does our way of looking at them." NO... history is what it is, the authors interpretation of FACTS may change, but FACTS remain the same. And since you cant change the past... in my unofficial opinion... that makes history FIXED!
This book is a sad disgrace.

Terrible, not helpful one bit.

I studied for weeks using this book and the companion book by Martini. When the time came to take my Excelsior Exam, I failed it. The multiple choice questions here are designed to make you believe you'll do o.k. when you take the actual test. I went into the exam feeling confident and knew within no time that I had been misled! The Excelsior test itself is 10X more difficult and focuses primarily on cytology and histology. This is a lousy study guide if you're taking the Excelsior exam.

I agree with the first comment. Many of the review answers are JUST PLAIN WRONG! Don't waste your money. Actually, I didn't even like the textbook. Neither are user friendly.

Many of the review answers to the questions are just PLAIN wrong in comparison to the book that Martini wrote. It is great to have, but it may be a waste of money considering that you will be tested on material that may be incorrect according to this manual.

Learn ethnography by doing ethnography.

This ethnography book does not read like a textbook, and it is not intended to be one. Instead, it is a project manual, briefly outlining five ethnographic assignments, and then including a number of papers from various students as examples.
The book is deliberately low on theory, and approaches ethnography from a more postmodern point of view, encouraging students to be reflexive and to write of their personal experiences and emotions. At the same time, the author states the importance of separating data from analysis, to help the ethnographer be more objective. The analysis of the data, where the ethnographer interprets the motives and emotions, is important but separate. He also gives further readings at the end of each assignment, knowing that this book does not go into much depth in either theory or practice.
The whole purpose of this book is teach ethnography by doing ethnography. The first three assignments are short and are designed to get the inexperienced student started in ethnography. The project descriptions are only about two pages long, and then each assignment has several example papers. The first is the map and description of a block, the second is a retrospective assignment on private language, and the third assignment is to study body language. All of these assignments help to sharpen the eye of the student in areas where they need to be observant.
The final two assignments are much bigger. One is a study on ritual, and the final assignment Kutsche calls "The Big Ethnography." This project is designed to last about a month. The final 100 pages of the book are devoted to eight exemplary student ethnographies.
Although the book was enjoyable to read, its strength really would come from actually doing the assignments, and if a class were not willing to do so, I think another book would be more appropriate. It is designed for an introductory class in ethnography, and is not written to be a reference for a field ethnographer, or for an advanced ethnography student.
In general I found the book somewhat refreshing in that it had short descriptions of the assignments, and then lots of case studies. For an introductory class in ethnography, it could be a good book if the professor was willing to have the students go through the assignments. But I would recommend the professor read the book through first before deciding to use it as a project manual.

Perhaps The Best Overview of History

I've looked at a number of overviews of world history and this is my favorite. It's written with great knowledge and a balanced viewpoint. I really like that the causes and mechanisms of history are presented and not just a stream of facts. It's told with emphasis on the general not the detail - there's no page long sidebars on Michaelangelo for instance. There's lots of statistics and maps to show how the world was changing. The other book of it's type that I really liked is "Rise of the West" by William McNeil which has a similar outlook.

Comprehensive, but extremely dry

Most likely, you're buying this book for a class, so you don't have a choice. I know that Fenich was one of the first (maybe the first?) to write a textbook on the MEEC industry, so he gets credit for that. However, he is one of the least compmelling writers I've ever read. I have to psych myself up before every chapter and make sure that I have some caffeine nearby to keep me awake. It's very dry and uninteresting, but informative.

The raison d'existence for Fundamentals of Complex Analysis with Applications to Engineering and Science, 3/e is our conviction that engineering, science, and mathematics undergraduates who have completed the calculus sequence are capable of understanding the basics of complex analysis and applying its methods to solve engineering problems. Accordingly, we address ourselves to this audience in our attempt to make the fundamentals of the subject more easily accessible to readers who have little inclination to wade through the rigors of the axiomatic approach. To accomplish this goal we have modeled the text after standard calculus books, both in level of exposition and layout, and have incorporated engineering applications throughout the text so that the mathematical methodology will appear less sterile to the reader.

To be more specific about our mode of exposition, we begin by addressing the question most instructors ask first: To what extent is the book self contained, i.e., which results are proved and which are merely stated? Let us say that we have elected to include all the proofs that reflect the spirit of analytic function theory and to omit most of those that involve deeper results from real analysis (such as the convergence of Riemann sums for complex integrals, the Cauchy criterion for convergence, Goursat's generalization of Cauchy's theorem, or the Riemann mapping theorem). Moreover, in keeping with our philosophy of avoiding pedantics, we have shunned the ordered pairs interpretation of complex numbers and retained the more intuitive approach (grounded in algebraic field extensions).

Cauchy's theorem is given two alternative presentations in Chapter 4. The first is based on the deformation of contours, or what is known to topologists as homotopy. We have taken some pains to make this approach understandable and transparent to the novice because it is easy to visualize and to apply in specific situations. The second treatment interprets contour integrals in terms of line integrals and invokes Green's theorem to complete the argument. These parallel developments constitute the two parts of Section 4 in Chapter 4; either one may be read, and the other omitted, without disrupting the exposition (although it should not be difficult to discern our preference, from this paragraph).

Steady state temperature patterns in two dimensions are, in our opinion, the most familiar instances of harmonic functions, so we have principally chosen this interpretation for visualization of the theorems of analytic function theory. This application receives attention throughout the book, with special emphasis in Chapter 7 in the context of conformal mapping. There we draw the distinction between direct methods, wherein a mapping must be constructed to solve a specific problem, and indirect methods that postulate a mapping and then investigate which problems it solves. In doing so we hope to dispel the impression, given in many older books, that all applications of the technique fall in the latter category.

In this third edition L. N. Trefethen and T. Driscoll have updated an appendix that reflects the progress made in recent years on the numerical construction of conformal mappings. A second appendix compiles a listing of some useful mappings having closed form expressions.

Linear systems analysis is another application that recurs in the text. The basic ideas of frequency analysis are introduced in Chapter 3 following the study of the transcendental functions; Smith charts, circuit synthesis, and stability criteria are addressed at appropriate times; and the development culminates in Chapter 8 with the exposition of the analytic-function aspects of Fourier, Mellin, Laplace, Hilbert, and z transforms, including new applications in signal processing and communications. We hope thereby that our book will continue to serve the reader as a reference resource for subsequent coursework in these areas. Features of the Third Edition

Novel features of the third edition are a discussion of the Riemann sphere, adding substance to the pragmatic concept of the "point at infinity" in complex analysis; an introduction to functional iteration and the picturesque Julia sets that thereby manifest themselves in the complex plane; an early exploration of the enrichment that the complex viewpoint provides in the analysis of polynomials and rational functions; and an introductory survey of harmonic function methods for calculating equilibrium temperatures for simple geometries. Optional sections are indicated with an asterisk so that readers can select topics of special interest. Summaries and suggested readings appear at the end of each chapter. As in previous editions, the text is distinguished by its wealth of worked-out examples that illustrate the theorems, techniques, and applications of complex analysis.

Good Introductory Book

This was the book that I learned Complex Analysis from. Definitely made the subject accessible to pretty much any reader. Plenty of exercises: some more theoretical, some more applied. It skillfully straddles the gap between being a theoretical math book and a math book for people with more applied aims (such as engineers). Most topics are covered thoroughly, though certain more complicated subjects such as winding number are left out for simplicity.
This book definitely prepared me for tackling the dense, theoretical, and exceptional "Complex Analysis" by Ahlfors. I'd recommend it as an introductory book for anyone trying to get into the subject who is intimidated by Ahlfors, as well as for anyone who is only interested in the essential commonly-applied tools.

Excellent Book!

First let me say that this book was an introduction to the subject for me. After reading the first six chapters, and working through most of the problems, I have to say this book is great. I highly recommend this to anyone who is learning on there own. In particular, the chapter on residues is excellent. The chapter on series is also good, although I would have liked more worked examples for proofs involving uniform convergence. Also, a little more emphasis on the Arguement would have been nice. Nevertheless, 5/5 for this one, it is extremely well written and the authors really provide motivation for the theorems to come. This is definitely one of the best math books I have read. Great buy, worth every penny.

A reference for life!

Complex Analysis is always there in every applied math document of engineering context. The reason I bought the particular book was that I stumbled on some old forgotten Conformal Mapping techniques in Digital Filter Design and needed some good reference to go through...I ended up reading the whole book from first to last page as it managed to capture my interest and distract me from my original purpose for a couple of happy months. So if you are planning to stick to the foundations beyond your studies and course exams, then THIS BOOK IS FOR LIFE...the subject is very extensive and tricky but the book manages to present completely all the necessary elements in the right pace and volume that keeps the application-oriented reader's attention focused while keeping at the same time -in my opinion- the right level of mathematical strictness. All the most essential theorems and formulas are nicely placed intro frames so underlining is not that necessary. Last but not least there is a wealth of examples and illustrations that make it a very friendly tool for anyone about to take course exams or some old engineering graduate seeking a quick reference like myself.

Essential Reading

What this book clearly demonstrates is that effective interpersonal skills are essential to the development and maintenance of any relationship - from family to friendship to work. That many of the personal and professional problems we experience everyday are the result of inadequate communication skills, lack of trust and self-disclosure, and inability to manage conflicts, anger, and stress.
Of special significance to more than half of the US population who report being shy, the author acknowledges the sometimes devastating impact of social fears on relationships and includes a section on working through shyness.
While the book is about skill building, it isn't just an exercise book. On the contrary, it smartly integrates psychological research data, theory, and exercises into a thought-provoking, readable volume. The approach is get-out-there-and-do-it experiential learning. Even though "Reaching Out" is an excellent text for classroom use, it is also very informative, practical, and useful for the self-help reader.

Relationship Basics Reference

If you work with children or young adults this is a "must have" reference book. My first copy was the fourth edition and I continue to purchace new copies as the editions change. This book breaks down into basic teachable elements complex human interactional dimensions. If you do group work in any context you will benifit from its wisdom. I have used this book in public schools at all grade levels, in therapy groups and family sessions, college courses, and to assist teens with improved social relationships. Human services work benifits from the clear and complete presentation of facts.
