For many years, C++ was the defacto language of choice in introductory Computer Science courses, due largely to its support for object-oriented programming, as well as its wide adoption in industry. However, because C++ is arguably the most complex language ever to be widely-used, Java, which also supports object-oriented programming, recently has emerged as the preferred introductory language. Nonetheless, demand for C++ skill is still high in industry and most universities require C++ programming at some point in the Computer Science curriculum. Although Java and C++ look similar, programming in C++ is somewhat more challenging and filled with subtle details. While there are many books that thoroughly describe C++ (see the Bibliography), the vast majority exceed 1,000 pages and, for the most part, are written for either experienced industry programmers or novices.

This book is designed as a quick start guide for students who are knowledgeable in an object-oriented language (most likely Java) and would like to learn C++. Throughout the text, we compare and contrast Java and C++, and show C++ substitutes for Java equivalents. We do not describe in detail basic concepts (such as inheritance) that are common in both C++ and Java; rather, we describe how the concepts are implemented in C++. This helps achieve one of the important goals of this book, which is to keep the page count reasonably low. Consequently, this book is not appropriate for students who have limited or no prior programming experience.

Organization The book begins with a brief overview of C++ in Chapter 0. In Chapter 1, we describe some of the basic expressions and statements in C++, which mostly mirror simple Java syntax. Functions, arrays, strings, and parameter passing are discussed in Chapter 2. We use the modern alternative of introducing and using the standard vector and string classes in the C++ library, rather than the older-style built-in array constructs.

Chapter 3 describes pointers and reference variables, paying particular attention to the host of pitfalls that await a C++ programmer. Chapter 4 is a long chapter that describes the basics of classes.

Two C++ features that are not part of Java are operator overloading and templates. Operator overloading is discussed in Chapter 5 and templates are discussed in Chapter 7. In between, we cover inheritance in Chapter 6. In Chapter 8, we examine exceptions in C++, as well as older library routines such as abort.

The next two chapters discuss some C++ libraries. Chapter 9 deals with I/O and Chapter 10 introduces the Standard Template Library, which is the C++ equivalent of the Collections API. Both libraries are complex enough to require an entire book: We provide the most important highlights, rather than attempting to list every detail.

Many courses will require C programming in addition to C++ programming. Because C++ builds on C, many C programming techniques are also found in C++, although in C++ they are not always the preferred way to do things. Chapter 11 covers primitive arrays and strings. As we mentioned earlier, modern C++ uses library classes as an alternative. Nonetheless, primitive arrays and strings will almost certainly be encountered by any C++ programmer, and the techniques are essentially the same in C++ and C. Chapter 12 covers C idioms that are occasionally used in C++, but probably should be avoided. Finally, in Chapter 13, we describe the Java Native Interface (again a whole book can be written on this one topic), which allows Java programmers to implement their methods in C++ or C.

Excellent Accelerated Intro to C++
By Adam Dukovich
Although C++ is definitely on the decline, it will be a major force in the programming world for years to come. This book is an excellent intro to the language taught specifically for a person with some Java experience, and it does do an effective job of comparing and contrasting the two languages. The analogies, I feel are invaluable to understanding abstract concepts in C++, and the approach is better than starting from the ground up, if you understand Java at a fundamental level. I also have to disagree with the reviewer below: the writing is quite good, it's concise and not excessively technical. I suspect that that reviewer is unfamiliar with contemporary texts on computer science, because this is one of the more readable ones I know.

Although the latter few chapters were not, I feel, exceptionally helpful, the book is a much better and lighter (not to mention cheaper) alternative to others out there, and is quite worth it, in every way.

Great book for (experienced) JAVA (and C ?) programmers
By Philippe Adjiman
Very useful. It respects its contract: saving your time by progressively build on your Java background the core concepts necessary to understand the C++ language (instead of reading a 1000 pages reference book). Sometimes the comparison of design issues between JAVA and C++ (for instance about class immutability) suppose that the reader has already a solid knowledge about object oriented programming and/or design patterns, but not necessarily requires it (by the way, if you're a JAVA programmer and you didn't read Effective Java Programming Language Guide, you may have missed something). Along with a strong experience in C, this book allow you to become an intermediate C++ programmer in only few days !

And remember: "[...] it is certainly not true that Java is better than C++, neither would we say that C++ is better than Java. Instead, a modern programmer should be able to use both languages, as each language has applications that can make it the logical choice". I deeply agree with the author's opinion.

Great For Students
By Andrew
I used this book in an introductory C++ class in college. Being a senior in Computer Science who has only been taught with Java, this book is a great starter to get into the world of C++. Nearly everything that is explained in the book is given an equivalent example in Java.

Having never used C++ before, I can recommend this for those who are starting with C++, but have a strong Java background. I wouldn't recommend this as an introductory book for a beginner in the world of programming, as it delves into many advanced topics right away.

A book to keep in your toolbox
By Mr. Hacks
There is some dated materials in the Electronics Pocket Handbook, but the majority of the information is quite relevant and informative.
There are pleanty of tables for quick calculations and several short explainations of some concepts in electronics.

However, those with weak eyesight should use a mangifying glass with this book. It wouldn't be a "Pocket Handbook" if it was in Large Print.

A Complete Work on Consumer Psychology
By A Customer
I read this book, during my first course in business.
After reading the book my thoughts on consumer psychology were better furnished; I was able to write a paper for my course evaluation that got me 99.25% and top rank.
The textbook is a strong reference that will be valuable to anyone working in Marketing. People, however, tend to find this science in particular more difficult than the other marketing sciences. The book, however, makes Consumer Behavior easy to understand.
Another related book although too simplistic in comparisson is Why We Buy by Paco Underhill.

Great insight of the marketplace and excellent examples
By A Customer
I am taking a college course titled after this textbook. It is very informative and gives helpful real life examples of how the principles are used in marketing today. My only problem with it is the information required to answer the questions at the end of the chapter is often not included in the chapter. My exams are given from those questions and many times I can't find the answers in the book. That can also be good because it makes me think for myself, but I wish I knew for sure if my exam answers are correct.

Great book for newbies!
By kane
If ur stepping into the building services industry, this book will be a comprehensive packaged info for your reading pleasure. Includes lotsa real-life diagrams, plan routings, concepts and explanation. It's 4am over here in Singapore and I've just finished reading one of the topics, just imagine how attractive the contents this book has! However, the only and regretable drawback is: the units are empirical which make it very difficult for me for in my country, we use SI metric units.

Mechanical and Electrical Systems in Buildings, 2nd

Very good book. Helps you understand the systems inside (and outside) of buildings in use everyday that most folks don't have a clue about. If you are interested in understanding how your building equipment functions this is a good book for you. Down to earth and well written. Recommend to property management personnel.

Mechanical and Electrical Systems in Buildings (3rd Edition)
By Nhan Nguyen
This book is terrible. If you are a certified HVAC specialist, it is for you. However, if you are new to this then it is a total waste of money. Explanation is bad, example are nowhere relate to the section discussed. And worst of all, there is no answer keys. You will not have a clue if you are correct or not. Every chapter there are as least half of the review question are calculations, yet in each chapter there will be probably one page showing how calculation is done. Example one of the simplest thing:

COP = Cooling Effect / Power Input. If you look up the index, you cannot find the word "cooling effect", find out whichever chapter they discuss, or show you how to calculate the "cooling effect".

You are in luck if you do not have class that uses this book. You have bad luck if you have a "good" teacher that using this book. You are doom if you have a "bad" teacher who using this book, might as well drop it. Waste of time and money.

for commercial applications
By s. mcelroy
I have done household and small commercial applications for 20+ years. I have recently been hired by a commercial refrigeration company. While I have not read the entire book it appears to be quite a comprehensive volume for commercial applications. Useful to make the transition I require. It is very helpful in answering my questions and providing additional information on the systems/components/effects/problems/reasons I am being introduced to on the job. Some of the details on each subject seem to be helpful to the professionals I work with. As one of the reviewers (who gave a one star rating) stated: all professionals should already have this knowledge. However, if I were a business owner I would want all my techs to have a copy of this book to speed the diagnosis and proper solution for the system's failure as opposed to simply replacing the failed part. (It seems to me the above mentioned reviewer should write his own book...I'd buy it).

Shilling's Text is Jam Packed
By A Customer
I am using this book for a master's level personnel law course. It covers all the topics quite thoroughly. It might be useful as a quick selective reference tool for HR administrators unfamiliar with one or more of the specialty areas. Some chapters (such as the one on benefits and the one on pensions) might benefit from another look at organization of the material. However, most of the information is accurate, if necessarily streamlined in many areas. Since personnel law now covers several deeply specialized areas, this is not surprising.
Stylistically, the book's sentences are jam-packed with information. This might prove difficult reading for some. In a few cases, a series of issues will be "hidden" by a single sentence that is oversimplified, but this is apparent only to a reader who is familiar with the field. The advantage is that the author has made a very creditable attempt to address all the issues. The author generally avoids drawing temporal or one-sided conclusions, which may mislead in a field that is fraught with disputes. I appreciate the even-handedness of this approach.
One small but annoying detail. On page 220 is a reference to a "rabbi trust". I took offense at the use of this term in the book, without quotation marks. I think later editions should avoid or explain the use of language which is apparently bigoted. In fact, I will recommend that my students not use this term because I can offer no good explanation for its continuance.

Invaluable Reference Guide for Human Resources Personnel
By Bryan Carey
Human Resource managers and specialists have a lot of legal material to learn. They have to keep up with the latest changes in the laws that affect the way they handle employees and the way they administer benefits. This guide, updated each year since its initial release, is designed to help human resource personnel find the answers to legal questions.

The most striking feature of this guide is its length. It is more than 1,100 pages long and contains 43 chapters. It needs to be this way, of course, to encompass all of the different laws pertaining to human resource management. It covers most everything about HR one can imagine, from rules and regulations regarding hiring and terminating to laws covering sexual harassment and pension administration.

Even though this book is a very good resource, there are still a few things you will not be able to find. The primary function of this reference guide is to provide an overview of the federal laws. Thus, many of the laws unique to the individual states are not discussed here. There are a few exceptions, but there are many state- specific questions this guide will not be able to answer. This is what happened to me one day when I consulted this book for an answer regarding workmen's compensation. It didn't have what I needed to know about my state, so I had to look elsewhere. Still, it pointed me in the right direction so it did have its use.

The organization of this book is ok, but some things about it are a little cumbersome. The table of contents, for example, doesn't include page numbers. Instead, it references the various pages based on the chapter number and the subsection (for example, "23.02" means turn to chapter 23, and then look for the second section). I think it would be better if it showed the page number.

There are plenty of references in this guide to specific court cases, pointing out new decisions and how they were decided. Human Resource laws change all the time, which is why a book like this becomes outdated quickly. Fortunately, the author of this handy guide updates it every year with a new release. It's a large, bulky book that may not be organized in the most efficient way, but is still invaluable as reference guide for HR personnel.

Time Saver, Cheaper than a Lawyer
By Amazon Customer
One would think these types of survey books would be obsolete because of the net. However, this one is excellent. If you are unfamiliar with a topic, or need to brush up, you can use this before going on to other resources. She does a fine job presenting the information in a readable, concise, and (as far as I can tell) accurate format. Not the replacement for a barrister, but helps you get prepared to ask the right questions.

From the Inside Flap
Preface

This book aspires to introduce the student to important ethical issues that arise in the world of business. As such, it fits into that branch of ethics referred to as Applied Professional Ethics. Business Ethics is the third book in the series Basic Ethics in Action. The series includes this book and two other anthologies on applied professional ethics: Environmental Ethics and Medical Ethics. The series (for which I am the general editor) also features other (generally single author) titles in Normative and Applied Ethics. These will include social and political philosophy, professional ethics, human rights, and legal ethics (among others in an expanding list). The series will also include focus books that are about half as long as the current one on particular moral issues, such as genetic engineering, international business, and informed consent. Basic Ethics in Action includes both types of book. The series aspires to the pattern set by Prentice Hall's influential Foundations of Philosophy series of the 1960s and 1970s.

The series is anchored by Basic Ethics, an essay on Normative Ethics and Metaethics. Instructors and students of ethics can use (1) Basic Ethics alone or with other primary texts in an ethics course, (2) Basic Ethics with one of the applied texts in the series in an ethics course that emphasizes an integration of theory and practice, or (3) one or more of the applied texts in courses concentrating on practice. DISTINCTIVE FEATURES OF THIS BOOK

This book includes an original interview with a prominent person who faces the practical challenges of ethical issues in business daily; a discussion of competition and a linking principle to decision making; an ethical methodology for linking theory to action; a discussion of gender issues as they relate to business, E-business, and the Internet; and a method for students to follow to write an essay using the information presented.

The book begins by introducing the student to my theory of worldview, or Weltanschauung. This concept is one of the unifying themes of Basic Ethics. I believe that acknowledging one's worldview and its relation to the common worldview (the worldview created by a particular community) is a crucial element in explaining and justifying what we value. This critical model, in turn, leads to what I call a linking principle to action. In the case of Business Ethics, I have constructed criteria that describe fair competition that I believe will allow students to move from theory to practice. A full exposition of this principle is found in my essay "The Principle of Fair Competition" in Chapter Four.

Chapter One also presents an interview with Mel Streeter, who runs the largest African American-owned architectural firm in the Pacific Northwest. This interview is presented to help students gain some perspective on the central themes in this book from the point of view of a successful practitioner in the field.

Chapter Two presents four ethical theories, which are not meant to be exhaustive. For readers who desire a more complete treatment of the major ethical theories, I suggest Basic Ethics or another source that explores some of the more prominent ethical theories.

Chapter Three addresses the nature of the corporation. Is a corporation a nameless piece of property—a shield behind which employees, stockholders, directors, and officers can hide from the responsibility for their actions? Certainly, that was part of the raison d'être of its creation. But should it be that way? Are there models by which to understand the corporation—such as its being an individual or including various entities (stakeholders) that interact with the company in some meaningful way? This chapter examines several ways to view the corporation to understand ethical issues related to it.

Chapter Four discusses the issues of professional practice. Since I believe that understanding professional practice is essential to understanding and developing guidelines for fair competition, Chapter Four is a key chapter in the book. After a section on the concept in general, several articles examine one established profession, advertising. Next the chapter examines the amorphous, emerging area of information technology and the Internet. Advertising and information technology offer practical applications of the key linking principle in the book: the standards of professionalism within business.

Chapter Five extends this discussion to issues within the corporation, specifically working conditions, affirmative action, and gender issues. Each of these addresses situations affecting the status of the employee within the corporation and the way she or he is treated. Intracorporate ethical issues operate together to create what has been termed corporate culture.

Finally, Chapter Six examines the corporation in the national regulatory environment and the international environment. The reasons that regulation is needed and what groups should provide it are discussed. The second topic involves moral absolutism and how to compete adequately in markets that have morally corrupt practices.

Beginning with Chapter Three, each chapter ends with a section on how to respond to case studies that contain ethical issues. Each section presents one step in this process so that by the end of Chapter Six, the student should have developed the ability to write an essay responding to case studies involving ethical issues.

A part of these sections in the core chapters of the book presents case studies depicting situations related to topics discussed in the chapter's readings. These case studies are separated into two groups, macro cases and micro cases. The macro case takes the point of view of someone in a managerial or supervisory role who considers business ethics from a systemic perspective. The point of view in the micro cases is of salespeople, secretaries, and middle managers who must make decisions that have ethical implications. Through these case studies, the student has an opportunity to react to the readings and test his or her own attitudes by writing an essay.

Basic Ethics in Action has an argument-based style and tone and intends to challenge the reader to think about some of the various ethical implications involved in specific situations. I have found that discussion of the more controversial premises focuses debate in a way that is satisfactory for both instructor and student.

Many may wish to read Business Ethics along with an ethical theory text (such as Basic Ethics). Others will want to delve more deeply into issues of practice by finding topics that interest them and then doing their own interview of people in the field. I believe that getting a sense of what real life is like is important. It puts these cases and principles into a context that can be more easily integrated into the students' worldview. This is, after all, the purpose of a course on Business Ethics. It helps students refine their practical decision-making skills so that they might be better able to live following a worldview that is, above all else, good. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

As in all projects of this sort, there are many to thank. First, I would like to thank the following reviewers: David Griffith, Ouachita Baptist University; Michael J. Olivette, Syracuse University; and David Redle, University of Akron (Ohio).

Next I would like to thank Ross Miller, my editor, for his support on this book and on the series Basic Ethics in Action. The series is already bearing the marks of his insightful judgment. I am also grateful to Katie Janssen, assistant editor, and to my able production editor, Linda B. Pawelchak.

I would also like to mention the help I have received both from Marymount University's research librarians, especially Margaret Norden and Marge Runge, and from Pat Milmoe McCarrick and the staff at the National Reference for Bioethics Literature (they also have a good collection on business ethics).

Finally, I would like to mention my family: Arianne, Seán, Éamon, and Rebecca. Their lives and the values they teach me are a constant source of strength and sustenance.

From the Back Cover

Business Ethics is a text in Basic Ethics in Action, a major new series undertaken by Prentice Hall under the general editorship of Michael Boylan. Books in the series will examine issues in normative and applied ethics from a holistic, worldview perspective. This series will feature texts that examine general issues as well as those more closely aligned to business ethics, medical ethics, environmental ethics, and professional ethics. The anchor volume to this series is Basic Ethics, a text that presents an evaluation of the major ethical theories through a novel critical device based on personal worldview (a compendium of the facts and values that guide our lives).

In Business Ethics , Boylan presents a collection of readings that examine traditional issues within a pedagogical context of his worldview methodology.

An excellent introduction
By Doug Erlandson
"Business Ethics," edited by Michael Boylan, is as good an introduction to the subject of morality and business as is on the market. Beginning with two chapters that provide an introduction to ethical theory in general, the book then presents a variety of viewpoints on the follow topics: The corporation as an individual, stakeholders, competition and the practice of business, advertising, information technology, working conditions, affirmative action, gender issues, government regulations, and issues regarding the international marketplace (including bribery and universal codes of conduct).

The various sections provide a well-balanced set of articles by a wide variety of authors representing diverse viewpoints. Each section is preceded by a brief but helpful introduction written by Boylan himself. At the end of each major section is a discussion of how to evaluate a case study.

The current edition has been on the market for about a dozen years now. However, there is a second edition scheduled to come out in the fall of 2013. This edition is not currently available for review.
