P. R. Kumar is a University Distinguished Professor and holds the College of Engineering Chair in Computer Engineering at Texas A&M University. His current research focuses on renewable energy systems, wireless networks, secure systems, automated transportation, and cyberphysical systems. He is a Fellow of the World Academy of Sciences, ACM, and IEEE, and a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering. He serves as an editor-at-large of IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, and has co-authored three other books, most recently, A Clean Slate Approach to Secure Wireless Networking, NOW (2015).

Pravin Varaiya is a Professor of the Graduate School in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at University of California, Berkeley. His current research focuses on transportation networks and electric power systems. He is a Fellow of IEEE and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a member of the US National Academy of Engineering. He is on the editorial board of Transportation Letters and has co-authored four books, most recently, Dynamics and Control of Trajectory Tubes, Birkhäuser (2014).

I have only started on the first three chapters but so far the book is interesting, informative, and arrived to my house in top condition. This textbook is extreamly helpful in understanding how to take x-rays and when/why they are necessary. I've lent it to a friend who's a dental assistant, who just wanted to learn more about dentistry, and she said it was 'insightful'. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about dental radiography for themselves or for a class.

Yes, I like self-improvement books as it only takes one or two ideas to radically change your approach and effectiveness in life. But if you read enough of them, it's a bit too easy to skim over certain things thinking "heard that, done that." Steve McDermott throws a curve ball in the genre by writing a book titled How to Be a Complete and Utter Failure in Life, Work & Everything: 44 1/2 Steps to Lasting Underachievement. Obviously, you know you're going to get improvement tips, but the framing of them in the negative helps to slow you down a bit...

Each step contains the negative exhortation, followed by a quote to avoid, details on why it's important not to do this particular step, and ending with actions not to take. The simple act of flipping the dominant idea from "do" to "don't" is enough to make you think a bit more about what he's actually telling you to do. Couple that with his very humorous writing style, and this book is not only useful but fun.

The only thing I found a bit strange/odd/difficult was the constant changing from the negative to the positive tense. Most of the chapter explains why that opposite reaction is used to accomplish greater things and be more effective. But he often changes from a "this is why this works" to a "so don't do it" so quickly that it makes for a difficult narrative flow. I still like the overall negative/positive angle, but you do have to work at some of the transitions to avoid thinking that you perhaps really *shouldn't* do what he's telling you not to do.

A fun read, well worth working through, especially for those who have an aversion to these types of books. At least if you fail, you'll have someone to look up to now. :)

Motivated? Phah! I can't be motivated!

I've been through a heat of self-development philosophies in my numerous years in this world, but none quite like this one. I would have thought I was wise enough to see through the reverse-psychology ploy, but from the beginning of this delightfully easy read and entertaining book made a miracle happen - a smile - and I felt energised to reflect on some areas in my life where I may have left to soak and may need a good frothing! I was privileged enough to catch Steve live -- and he's as charming as he is in the book. A good read and a must for anyone who feels stuck in a rut.

A funny look at serious issues

What a delightful book. McDermott has wit on par with Monty Python and insight on par with Tom Rogers. Using reverse logic, McDermott provides a treasure trove of solid advice under the guise of comically telling you how to fail. This makes the reader think about the actual point being made, and that process aids in remembering. McDermott also helps the reader's memory by including pithy quotations.

The book weighs in at 196 pages, and consists of 44 short chapters (chapter 44 is labeled 44 1/2). Each chapter addresses a specific step to take if you want to ensure you are a complete and utter failure. These include such things as:

* Don't do things on purpose.
* Don't spend any of your time on the future.
* Don't involve other people.
* Don't commit to lifelong learning.

These are precisely the things that differentiate successful people from those who merely glide along (or worse). By assuming the position of wanting to be a failure, McDermott has some fun while also bringing up issues all of us should take seriously.

Each chapter starts with a relevant quote, such as this one from Chapter Five: "Never let your memories be greater than your dreams." (Doug Ivestor). In keeping with the "how to fail" theme, these are designated "Quote to Avoid."

McDermott talks about how you can avoid whatever it is that chapter advises you against. In doing this, he addresses the excuses people use for not doing those things (as if these are the correct reasons), resources to avoid, steps not to take, habits not to form, and so forth. He sums up each chapter with a box called "Action not to take." Of course, if you do the opposite of all this you will be a success rather than a failure.

The text also contains instructive anecdotes from people who have succeeded (McDermott cautions you not to do whatever it is they did) and those who have failed (follow their pattern and do what they did, McDermott advises).

Like many self-help or self-improvement books, this one is light reading. But that's not because it lacks substance. It's because the author uses plain language and writes clearly, and the book is not quite a couple hundred pages. If you're into reading these kinds of books, this is a good one to add to your collection. You may want to read one chapter a day for 44 days.

The effort McDermott put forth to serve the reader is evident. This isn't a fluff piece for selling on McDermott's rubber chicken circuit. The book stands on its own as easily worth its price.

And there's something more that puts this book in rare company. McDermott is a speaker and author in the U.K., so he doesn't have the bad American author habit of lacing a "nonfiction" book with unrelated personal political views. Missing also is the now common presentation of disinformation as fact.

At one time, the absence of these things was unremarkable and expected. Today, the absence is both remarkable and pleasantly surprising. This is the kind of writing that helps build a book-reading population, something that has unfortunately been on the decline for years.

Ethics addresses questions of right and wrong, good and bad, virtue and vice. Ethics involves the evaluation of actions and lives, choices and characters. The orientation is toward rational argument—toward the production of reasons supportive of one's position. As argued by Dworkin (1977) when I take a moral position on an issue I involve myself in a distinctive sort of discourse. Many thinkers since the 17th century have sought to find a solid ground upon which to determine the correct system of morals. In this work the terms morals and ethics are used interchangeably.

This is a work on the role of morality in the various components of the criminal justice system. Specifically the role of defense counsel and prosecutor, the role of the police, the court, corrections, probation and parole officers, and the victims of crimes themselves as well as related issues.

Though defense counsel and the prosecutor are both bound by the Code of Professional Responsibility, they have significantly different roles and functions, and their ethical problems vary accordingly. The obligations of the defense counsel derives from the importance within the adversarial system of confidentiality between attorney and client, the defendant's presumption of innocence and burden of proof, the constitutional right to counsel, and the client's constitutional privilege against self-incrimination. On the other hand, we have the prosecutor who does not represent a private client, and is therefore, not affected by these considerations in the same manner.

As an example, the defense attorney may withhold evidence: there is nothing unethical in keeping a guilty defendant off the stand, and putting the government to its proof. However, it does not follow that the prosecutor is also privileged to withhold or suppress material evidence or that there is something essentially unfair in this double standard. Is it ethical for a defense attorney to make a prosecution witness appear to be inaccurate or untruthful under cross-examination even when the defense attorney knows that the witness is testifying accurately and truthfully? As indicated by the late Chief Justice Earl Warren, "the defense is entitled to `put the government to its proof' and to `test the truth of the prosecution's case."' Neither of these rationales justify a prosecutor obtaining a conviction by making a defense witness appear to be lying when the prosecutor knows that witnesses are testifying truthfully.

A prosecutor has enormous and unique discretion in defining the particular crime, affecting the punishment, and even in deciding whether or not to prosecute. This discretion explains the differences in prosecutorial ethics and defense counsel ethics to be discussed in this work.

We examine the role of the police and their use of police powers. The role of the police is to uphold the law. Police possess the power to use their authority, force, and discretion. They have the choice to arrest or not to arrest, to mediate or to charge, along with their choice to use deadly force. The police are held to the highest of standards and are supposed to be provided with standards of ethics that guide them in their work. Is this a good description of the police?

To what standards are correctional officers and probation and parole officers held? Here, too, there can be abuses of power and authority. The uniform is supposed to bestow the authority of rational and reasonable control and not be abused.

Important to the content of this work are the ethical obligations of victims not to seek private vengeance. It is the obligation of the prosecuting attorney to ensure that victims in pressing charges make correct choices and not seek any vengeance. In a civilized society crime victims and their families are expected to delegate revenge for criminal wrongs to a system of legal, rather than personal justice.

In the classroom, university professors like to upset their students by pointing out that there are no universally disapproved modes of conduct. Even a killing that we would consider murder is acceptable in some societies. There are those acts which once were or now are attacked as immoral. As indicated by Ryan in his chapter, "... moral education ... should be a matter of exposure to the actions, the thoughts, and tales about virtuous people."

This work presents a full discussion of issues of morality/ethics and the criminal justice system, and is not a work best left for philosophers and philosophy classes to learn. This is a solid work that deals with issues that bring to light how the criminal justice systems works with some suggestions for change.

Morality and law leaves a lot of unanswered questions

This is an extreme liberal view of morality and the law. Chapter 6 on safety is an example where the author expresses the opinion that justice is better served if we do not lock up criminals. This is unrealistic and dangerous thinking for the criminal justice professional.
