Good beginning ESL text

This is one of four books in a series of beginning texts for ESL. It is clearly presented and easy for the students to understand and use. The emphasis is on grammar and vocabulary taught through conversation. There is not much in the way of reading, writing, or cultural studies. It is my understanding that this edition is no longer in print and has been replaced by a new and improved Side by Side.

The best of the best

I absolutely LOVE all books by Molinsky. If you follow the methodics offered by the author, the results are the greatest. I have been teaching English for many years, and I went through a lot of textbooks. Molinsky's books are the greatest if you want your students to get the fastest results in speaking and communicating. The books also save time in preparation for the class.

This sixth edition of Strategic Marketing for Nonprofit Organizations comes at a time when nonprofit marketing is poised to have a much greater impact on the field of nonprofit management and on the growing intersection between that sector and the business world. The first two editions of this book served to legitimize marketing as a distinct career and a distinct educational discipline, while the third edition focused less on whether one should carry out nonprofit marketing and more on how one should do it well. The fourth edition shifted its emphasis to focus more closely on strategic planning. As the fourth edition noted, "The major need of the nonprofit sector now is not so much for techniques to implement marketing, but for assistance in strategic planning. Many nonprofits face significant declines in traditional sources of revenue, dramatic changes in their customer mix, and bold new competition. They need help rethinking where they are going and what broad strategies they should be using to get there:"

The fifth edition strongly reflected the growing sophistication of the field and its cadre of skilled practitioners by incorporating their insights into the text and examples. It also emphasized the growing importance of social marketing, the application of marketing concepts not just to organizations but to programs designed to bring about social change. It tiptoed into the international arena where the nonprofit sector was beginning to have a significant impact and sought to reflect the blurring of the previously distinct lines between nonprofit and commercial marketing.

This sixth edition marks a major change in the way in which nonprofit marketing is conceived and applied. First of all, much more strongly than in previous editions, it seeks to position marketing as among the most critical—if not the most critical—disciplines needed for nonprofit success. It argues that success ultimately requires the influencing of the behavior in a wide range of key target markets—clients, funders, policy makers, volunteers, and the media, as well as the nonprofit's own staff. This is the province of marketing because marketing is the "behavioral influence business." The book positions marketing as central to top management's achievement of the organization's mission. Implicit in this volume is the notion that everyone in nonprofit management—including the CEO—ought to have a thorough grounding in marketing and what it does and can do.

Second, this edition reflects the breaking down of three kinds of boundaries that heretofore limited the field. First, it removes the conception of nonprofit marketing as primarily a North American phenomenon. As we will show in several places in the book, nonprofit enterprise is flourishing everywhere in the world, including Asian countries with a tradition of family self-help and formerly communist countries with a tradition of state social service. We recognize that we have much to learn—as well as contribute—as we broaden our compass to include these new environments.

The sixth edition also removes the assumption that the target audience for a text on nonprofit marketing is only present and future practitioners in nonprofit organizations. It is a growing reality that both the government and for-profit sectors have a growing interest in "social enterprise." Many government agencies have missions highly similar to nonprofits and are often major players in the field of social marketing. At the same time, corporations are increasingly becoming involved in the social sector through venture philanthropy, cause marketing, and corporate volunteerism programs. Managers—and future managers—in both the government and corporate domains need to appreciate the concepts and tools described here and understand the nonprofit environment and what it is like to try to bring about change within it.

Finally, consistent with its behavioral focus, this edition organizes much of the discussion of strategic and tactical options around two central behavioral science models, what we call "the Stages of Change" and "the BCOS drivers." These models guide our thinking about how to influence behavior in many different contexts. They provide a powerful portable framework for nonprofit practitioners to use to be successful in this challenging environment

Great Nonprofit Marketing Text!

This book was required by my college professor, and I enjoyed reading it. It is very easy to read and very enjoyable as well. Excellent examples, and well laid out material. The course was very good as well. If you want a good introductory book about marketing services for a Nonprofit Organization then consider this one.

This book is invaluable for libraries!

I am taking an MLIS Graduate program and took a Library Marketing course that used this book. So far it has been the most valuable class for me, and I learned a great deal, from marketing products and services, to creating marketing plans, to writing grants. All of it was based on this book, and it was simply invaluable. Libraries will need creative funding in the future and this is a great start!

A decent introductory textbook

I used Modern Physics for Scientists and Engineers for a sophomore-level modern physics course in an engineering curriculum. I liked the textbook. The authors' approach seemed to stress the experimental bases for modern theories of relativity and of atomic theory/quantum mechanics. I really preferred this approach to that of other textbooks -- postulating the governing laws of each and then proceeding to derive their consequences -- because it made the subjects less abstract.

While another reviewer has criticized the book's figures and its end-of-chapter exercises, I found the figures that present experimental data very helpful, and I thought the exercises were just fine -- many prompted the reader to work through derivations rather than to perform "plug-and-chug" computations. In addition, I enjoyed reading the biographical vignettes about historically important scientists that dot the book's chapters, although some readers might find these a bit corny, or a bit distracting.

While other textbooks treat relativity and quantum mechanics in a more detailed and sophisticated way, I think this book covers those topics adequately, with a level of depth and with mathematics (i.e. vector calculus and differential equations) appropriate for an undergraduate in engineering or the physical sciences.

Great text for what it is

This book has a nice layout, is very well written, and covers all the important material in a course on modern physics. It also has nice biography sections on the important contributors to modern physics. I liked it so much I kept it as a reference after the course was over.

If you're looking for a complete introduction to quantum mechanics for physics students, this is not what you're looking for. This book only provides a basic background in modern physics that would be helpful for later studies in chemistry, engineering, materials science, etc. However, what it does, it does well.

Brainy but Brilliant

Yes, while Bandura can be a "thick" read (I own four of his titles and this applies to them all) he is also able to explain some very crucial topics regarding societal and human behavior. SLT is a wonderful insight into the world of how learning takes place regarding a vast array of situations and circumstances. If you are looking for the most thorough and insightful book on how learning takes place, and is backed up wtih scientific studies and is not just some self-proclaimed guru's opinion, this is a must read. Bandura also gives credence to other psychologists and professionals, while of course dismissing those whose theories do not hold up under scrutiny, so he is not going to present you with only one side of the equation, so to speak. You cannot go wrong with Bandura!

Roger LeRoy Miller received his PhD from the University of Chicago.  He is currently Director of the Institute for University Studies in Arlington, Texas.  Dr. Miller is a legal specialist and author of numerous books on law and the legal environment, including criminal procedure.  In addition, Dr. Miller has authored books on the war on drugs, the economics of crime and criminal behavior, and on related topics.

Love love love this book!

I have to read this book for a class in college and I have to say, it's probably the most concise and clearly written introduction to economics and public issues I've ever encountered. Not only is it well written, it was exceedingly well edited. Nothing in this book is superfluous and everything is relevant. I would read this book even if it wasn't assigned reading. It's very even-handed, it's academic without being boring, but basically the point of the book is that there's no free lunch: Public issues are issues for a reason; there is no magical system that will result in no cost somewhere to someone, and sometimes measuring the outcomes is impossible until you've already chosen a path.

This book deals with some very serious issues in an engaging and thought provoking way, and it's a pretty easy read. You do not have to know one thing about economics to appreciate this book. I'd recommend it to anyone that's interested in politics, economics, business, or even just plain old social philosophy.

This book takes you to a short, but deep conversation on how public issues in United States has become very debatable and hard to control. The chapters pertaining to mortgages meltdown, public pensions, and our favorite, Social Security, all gives us how origination came to be and how Americans demand more out of it, as if it were supposed to be used as income to live off of.

Improving, but not really a classic

I have taught operating systems at the graduate level for the last 5 years. In other areas of computer science, I've been spoiled by classic textbooks (e.g. Aho, Sethi and Ullman's "Compilers: Principles Designs and Tools", aka "The Dragon Book" for compiler design, Hennessy and Patterson's "Computer Architecture a Quantitative Approach", etc.) Computer Operating systems is a mature field, yet no textbook reaches classic stature in Operating Systems. Previous editions of the textbook have had serious errata in the problem sets (it i embarrassing to assign unsolvable problems to students) I no longer use any problems from this book as a result.
However, among Operating Systems textbooks, there are primarily 2 categories, those with example code (e.g. Tannenbaums) and survey books. This is a survey book (sometimes called theoretical, but not in the Automata Theory or Algorithms sense). It has some overview of design principles and some analysis, which makes it better than the others I've seen, but still leaves a bit to be desired, I feel it is still a bit too qualitative. I'd like to see more back of the envelope analysis (like say Patterson and Hennessy's book). The section on scheduling is pretty good, with some nice analysis, and the queueing theory section is useful for first year grads and upper division undergrads. Still, I need to assign quite a bit of additional literature.

Good reference, maybe. Not very readable!

My Operating Systems course used this book and we were assigned chapters to read every week. It was incredibly painful. This book does not read well at all. The ideas aren't very well motivated. Many times, Stallings just enumerates a list of alternate strategies for solving a problem without talking AT ALL about how the strategies came or why we should think about all these different strategies in the first place. He just lists and describes them. Very dry.

I eventually stopped reading the book and just used it as a reference when doing our open book online quizzes. This worked well. It's easy to find specific information ("How does Round Robin Scheduling work?") and the explanations are reasonably clear and concise. But if you're trying to actually read it sequentially to get the general idea, you're in for some pain (and sleepiness).

Great book for those interested in sports marketing

I used this book when writing my term paper on sports sponsorship and I found it very insightful. Everyone who is interested in sports and sports marketing should read this book.
