Excellent!

I am currently taking an introductory art history class, and Gombrich's THE STORY OF ART is the textbook. This book was an absolute pleasure to read, as I found myself going beyond the assigned readings. I finished the entire book from beginning to end within the span of two weeks!
Even if you aren't very interested in art history, THE STORY OF ART remains a must read; at worst, you will be entertained, and at best you will gain an entirely new perspective on art. The prose is masterfully written and the analysis he presents is very accessible. He discusses everything from ancient Greek sculpture to Renaissance painting to modern architecture. The reproductions of the artwork in the book are also extremely good (there are several high-quality fold-out pages included, such as one of Leonardo's Last Supper pre-restoration). I was very pleased with both the amount and breadth of coverage he provided.
Even though I haven't read any other introductory art history books, I find it hard to believe that any other book could do the job as well as Gombrich has done it here. I would highly recommend THE STORY OF ART to anyone who wants an art history primer.

My Bible

Originally, Dr. Gombrich intended (in the 1940s) for this book to be read by high school students; or as he writes "young people." Since then, The Story of Art became popular and his book mushroomed into several languages and editions. Because his language is non-fussy and non-scholarly, I have recommended this book to many non-artist friends; none of whom could get beyond the first few pages. So the reader may need some art background. But if you want to know why the Egyptians chose to draw as they did, or why Gothic art and architecture looks as it does (or "what's THAT all about?"), then this is the book for you. I have reread the book three times and may reread it one or two times more before I go to that great studio in the sky.

Excellence at its best

I must say that this is the best comprehensive art historical book that I have ever come across. It's actually a book that I have been reading more for pleasure than for study, and I recommend it to anyone who is even remotely interested in painting, architecture or any artistic elements. The photos are fantastically sharp and accurately placed near if not next to the corresponding text and in no way is it difficult to read or understand. The author writes as if he were explaining it to the reader for the first time, but it does not feel elementary in any way. An excellent book with fantastic promise. I have learned much with very little effort - the best way to study!!

About the Author

STEPHEN MINOT, Professor Emeritus of Creative Writing at the University of California, Riverside, has been teaching creative writing for thirty years. A writer himself, Minot has authored three novels, two collections of short stories, and three textbooks. His latest text by Prentice Hall, LITERARY NONFICTION: THE FOURTH GENRE, is due in the Fall of 2002. His numerous short stories have appeared in such publications as The Atlantic, Harper's, The Kenyan Review, The Paris Review, and The Sewanee Review, among others. His work has been chosen to appear in The O. Henry Prize Stories collection, The Best American Short Stories, The Story, and New American Stories. Over the course of his career, Professor Minot has been the recipient of the Atlantic First Award as well as the Saxton Memorial Fellowship and the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship for writing.

Parts Worth Using, particularly for poetry

I find that this text provides a better discussion of poetry than Janet Burroway's recent creative writing book, though her text is stronger in its discussion of fiction. While I don't agree with everything Minot says about writing (he can be too simplistic and authoritative in ways that could limit writers' expression and experimentation), and I don't like his selection of poems or stories very much, I use his book as simply one more resource for students. He offers another voice besides my own, and the class can dispute or agree with his comments if we so desire. The poetry chapters I've found most helpful are "Images," "The Sound of Words," and "Traditional Rhythms." I've also used parts of his fiction discussion. I supplement the book with many handouts (mostly poems) and some excerpts from Steve Kowit's In the Palm of Your Hand and Dorianne Laux/Kim Addonizio's The Poet's Companion. I use Burroway's text primarily for the fiction unit, and I also use parts of Jerome Stern's Making Shapely Fiction.

Excellent Resourc

Three Genres is an excellent resource for beginning to intermediate creative writing students. It gives them the terminology they need to discuss written works and also includes many excellent examples in each genre. The book also includes some writing exercises, but the book is more of a scholarly resource. I've used it in my creative writing classes at the college level, and I haven't had the problems that other users describe regarding the "Don't do" lists. I rather like those. They help students avoid some of the pitfalls of beginning writers.

For this market, try another book

I had fond memories of this book from years ago, so I used it for my creative writing class. I was surprised, upon revisiting it, to find out how little it offers in the way of actual terminology, which is pretty important information when you want to talk about parts of poems or parts of fiction. If the parts don't have names, it's hard to have specific conversations about pieces of writing. Also, I and my class were turned off by the long lists of what NOT to do. My students found this to be somewhat patronizing and definitely an introduction to writer's block as that list of negatives rang its little list of 'not' in their ears. Further, Minot places a lot of emphasis on writing about family and the relationships therein. Most writers know that relying on the familiar is not always a good idea, as it can result in the trite, the sentimental, or the overly dramatic. It takes a long time to learn how to control the elements of the familiar to make it "fiction" that can be talked about with others, so this does not seem a good approach for beginning writers. Minot does not seem to like writing as an exploration of writing. He seems to favor it more as a means of exploring personal relationships. He does present many good ideas in the book, but they are good in the way that most obvious information is good--great to have, but irritating to receive.

An anecdotal blueprint for a profession

Rechtin is no stranger to architecting complex systems. Most of his insights are drawn from his 40 years experience as the chief architect for NASA during the moon landings and a long list of defence and civil positions.
The book covers a wide range of topics germane to architects as a field and profession: boundaries and interfaces, information systems, the challenge of ultra-quality, economics and public policy, AI, assessing architectures are some of the sections.
The style of the book is alomost memoir-like. He groups his experiences into three main headings with many sub headings. Each item within the sub headings rate 2-4 pages with some heuristic attached. It's a fascinating read because it's a rare glimpse into the mind of someone whose job it was to "keep the entire system in his head". He basically had to answer and implement a system that solved the question, "How do we get three men to the moon and back before the end of the decade?".
The two most useful aspects are his in depth treatment on the economics and politics of architecting and a multitude(over 100) heuristics. For instance,

The book has been in print for some time and many of the examples regarding designing jet propulsion systems, fail-safe computers for the moon or road networks may not be easily related to accounting, manufacturing or web systems. But as a blueprint for a profession that is growing in importance, it lays an anectdotal foundation that will be hard to match.

A seminal work

I avoided buying this book in the hope that the author's later works would cover the material, but I eventually decided to buy it. I'm really glad I did. It forms the foundation of the later works, and I believe that it's essential reading for practicing or aspiring System/s Architects. It was a challenging read for me because of the content bias towards space and electronic systems (my experience lies in corporate, software and social systems) but I also appreciated the insight into these other system domains.

Systems architecting is the use of architecting tools and techniques (e.g.,analysis, insights, heuristics metaphors, practice, ethics and modus operandi) to systems (collections of different things which collectively produce results not producible by the components, alone. This is the first and most fundamental of three books on the subject. The second extends architecting to software, progressive modeling, politics, and architects in industry. The third uses the art of systems architecting in structuring organizations.

this text was required reading for an uper division Modern Art History course i have taken, which requires no prerequisites. the book, however, certainly assumes previous indepth knowledge of topic. overall, a very informative, technical book.

The Best approach

Everybody knows the boring of reading introduction material about art. It's always more of the same. Because of that I suspected very much this book with its "open title"... No reason for that: Modern Art is a careful work about 20th century aesthetics, crossing an open and contextual perspective with closed analysis of key works. And best of all, the synthetic approach of painting, sculpture and architecture is very well balanced and justified. It's not a book, but a very good surprise as both an introduction as a very deep analysis of 20th century art.

HORRIBLE; Basically one long Critique by Three Authors.

I would NOT recommend this Book. Hunter, Jacobus and Wheeler are very critical and often lend their opinions intrusively with lack of reason / explanation. I had this book for Two Art History classes, the Instructor rarely referenced it, because of the Authors. If you are new to art or want to learn more this is NOT the book!

Example at the end of Chapter 13: "Later, the new style would be used more literally, even daringly, in the "development" of the new city, a process that would also bring with it the wasting, if not complete destruction, of the undervalued heritage of the recent past." Note the Authors spend most of the paragraph bashing the Rockefelier Center in New York. They never explain why it is "bland" or how the effort becomes "pallid". You will literally read chapters over and over, finding little tangible support for the authors conclusions. Imagine the Snobbiest / Know it All Person you know then think about how they would write a book.

MINUSES:

The pictures: Are way to dark, Some are discolored and Stretched to fit the page. Not enough pictures of Architecture.

The chapters are not well organized.

The book over concentrates on Language and Voice: Therefore becoming inconclusive gibberish.

It Fails to bring meaning to its own Title; Modern Art. By the end of the book the reader has No Idea what Modern Art is in a whole: where it has been, why it changed, stylistic elements, political context, and etc.

About the Author

Tom E. C. Smith is currently Dean of the College of Education and Health Professions, and University Professor of Special Education at the University of Arkansas. He has been on the faculties of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, University of Alabama at Birmingham, and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Prior to receiving his Ed. D. from Texas Tech University, he taught children with intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, and autism at the elementary and secondary levels. President Clinton appointed him to three terms on the President’s Committee on Mental Retardation. He has served as the Executive Director of the Division on Autism and Developmental Disabilities of the Council for Exceptional Children since 1996. His current professional interests focus on teacher education and legal issues and special education.

 

Edward A. Polloway is the Rosel H. Schewel Professor of Education and Human Development at Lynchburg College in Virginia, where he has taught since 1976. He also serves as Vice President for Community Advancement and Dean of Graduate Studies. He received his doctoral degree from the University of Virginia and his undergraduate degree from Dickinson College in Pennsylvania. He has served twice as president of the Division on Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities  of the Council for Exceptional Children and also on the board of directors of the Council for Learning Disabilities. He also served on the committee that developed the 1992 definition of mental retardation for the American Association on Intellectual Disabilities. He is the author of 20 books and over 100 articles n the field of special education with primary interests in the areas of learning disabilities and intellectual disabilities.

 

James R. Patton is an Educational Consultant and Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Texas at Austin. He received his Ed. D. from the University of Virginia. He is a former high school biology teacher and elementary-level special education resource teacher. He has also taught students who were gifted and those who were gifted/learning disabled. His professional interests include transition, life skills instruction, adult issues related to individuals with special needs, behavior intervention planning, and classroom accommodations. He has served on national boards of the Division on Developmental Disabilities, the Council for Learning Disabilities, and the National Joint Committee on Learning Disabilities.

 

Carol A. Dowdy is Professor Emerita of Special Education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where she has taught since receiving her Ed. D. degree from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa . She has written eight books on special education and published 34 articles on learning disabilities. She has served on the national board of the Council for Learning Disabilities and the Professional Advisory Board for the Learning Disabilities Association of America, and she has worked closely with the federal department of Vocational Rehabilitation to assist in their efforts to better serve adults with learning disabilities.

A spectacularly bad and poorly-arranged textbook.

I was pretty shocked at how poorly written and poorly organized a book with 4 (listed) authors could actually be. It made me wonder if this was a textual example of the adage that "too many cooks spoil the soup."

I could give a laundry list of problems with this book, but I'll make a few general complaints and then give a few examples from the book. First, the authors, despite being professors, have little to no idea about how this information should be scaffolded for the student who is new to the subject. Instead of a foundation which works from the very general to the very particular, you get a hodge-podge of generals and particulars mixed into huge, sweeping chapters--filled with lengthy, sweeping paragraphs--that contain little discernible organization as you read through them. The book reads like a professor (I once had) talks: from broad topic to ranging tangents or from narrow topics to narrow tangents. That professor just knew too much for her own good. She constantly navigated in a sphere of ideas way beyond her students who were learning the material for the first time. If this weren't an introductory text for this subject, I'd soften this critique, even if though I ultimately can't forgive the authors for the text in its entirety.

There are diagrams that don't appear on the page or pages in which the diagram is referenced. Instead, there is some other practical or factual scenario insert on that page. Why not move that around? This wouldn't be a big deal as these things do happen in text formatting, but this book is full of examples of this kind of poor organization or formatting. So many of the visual or textual "inserts" in the chapters seem haphazardly placed. I was regularly asking myself, "What is this here for? It's a factual scenario or personal spotlight that doesn't link explicitly to anything I've just read."

The technical language of special education is as vast as the Pacific Ocean. So what happens here? The authors use vague terms they clearly understand but are difficult to discern the meaning of from the context. Here's only one example from innumerable examples: "If a referral is made, and the IEP team accepts the referral..." What's the referral for? Who is it coming from? To whom is it being made? Don't look to the context because the word "referral" doesn't appear in the paragraphs before or after this sentence. If the context is clear from something a student would have read, all it would take is one word to modify the word "referral" and the student would (or should) instantly recall what he/she read a page or two earlier. In this case, the once called this a "formal" referral. That's only slightly better. However, on the very next page the chart calls it an "Initial referral to eligibility determination." This mix of terminology is now confusing. Terms of art should be consistently used for students new to the subject. But isn't this just how experts talk to each other? They don't need good, clear context or hyper-consistent usage to convey meaning to each other. (And so I imagine these four cooks slapping each other on the back as they read through these chapters.)

On page 70, the authors mention "key steps" in a process, but those steps--which CHRONOLOGICALLY illustrate a process--are bullet-pointed. Further down the page, the authors mention helpful "guidelines" and THESE are numbered. Huh? They aren't even statutory or chronological, so it's not like numbers were even necessary or helpful here. Where numbers would have helped, you get bullets.

For another example, just look at diagram 3.4. It's a decision-based flow chart with arrows following "yes" or "no" lines of reading. Are there questions in ANY of the boxes for the student to read an then answer with a yes or a no? Nope. It's just absurd. Of course, only one bland, in-text reference to this chart appears on the page before the chart, not on the pages where the chart appears. The chart, however, is described in detail on the page opposite from it. That makes sense, right? Is the citation to the chart made there too? No. Only a good contextual understanding of the text tells you the authors are actually walking through and explaining their question-less "yes" or "no" answer chart. Unbelievable. Their editor should be fired or I should be hired. One of the two.

And so it goes with this kind of poor writing and poor editing filling the pages. As a student who has been around the educational block, I am stunned at how hard this book makes it for me to read and understand the material. I've read challenging texts before, but for a careful reader like me this one is punishing to read--and I mean that. It's punishing.

While it is full of content, it is otherwise terrible. TERRIBLE. I gave it the second star solely for its content. That was a gift.

Not Helpful for New Teachers or for Practical Hands-On Ideas in the Classroom; Poorly Organized & Edited.

MF48's review is dead on. This book is poorly organized, includes tons of terms without any proper explanation, and repeats information randomly (including identical sentences!). It is also poorly edited. There are many mistakes within the writing. This book was required for a graduate course last semester, and I picked it up from my shelf today wanting to reference a couple portions of it for an essay. Trying to use the book again reminded me why I hated it so much. It is not easy to navigate at all, not even using the subject index. It was a horrible introduction to special education.

This book does spend time going through various legalities of IDEA, although those details are not structured in an easy-to-understand manner. It is far easier to actually read the government web site on IDEA or to peruse articles about IDEA on about.com. That really tells you something.

In lieu of this book, I would highly recommend "Neurodiversity in the Classroom" by Thomas Armstrong. It was one of the required texts for a course I have this semester that is also on special education. Armstrong's book offers tons of practical, hands-on approaches for various disabilities, and they can be used at the K-12 level or at the college level. I never plan on letting Armstrong's book leave my shelf, but I would actually consider throwing the "Teaching Students with Special Needs" book in the recycling bin. I had to write too many notes in it with cross-reference arrows because it was so disorganized, so it's likely that no one would want my used copy. In short, I really hated this book, and I would not recommend it to any teacher.
