About the Author

Samuel T. Gladding is a Professor of Counseling and chair of the Department of Counseling at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Gladding is also the former editor of Journal for Specialists in Group Work and the author of over 100 professional publications. He has been a practicing counsellor in both public and private agencies since 1971. His leadership in the field of counselling includes service as president of the American Counseling Association (ACA), the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES), the Association for Specialists in Group Work (AGW), and Chi Sigma Iota (counseling academic and professional honor society international). Gladding is also the former editor of Journal for Specialists in Group Work and the author of over 100 professional publications. He is a national Certified Counselor (NCC), a Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CCHC), and a practicing Licensed Professional Counselor (North Carolina). Gladding is a Fellow in the American Counseling Association and a recipient of the Gilbert and Kathleen Wrenn for a Humanitarian and Caring Person.

 

 

Kevin G. Alderson is an Associate Professor of Counselling Psychology at the University of Calgary. Dr. Alderson has been a counsellor for more than 30 years and a licensed practicing psychologist for 25. His experiences have included working as a child and youth care worker, a caseworker, a mental health worker, and a psychologist in diverse settings. Before joining the university in July 2001, Dr. Alderson was Head of Counselling and Health Services at Mount Royal College (now a university) in Calgary for several years. Alderson is the current Editor of the Canadian Journal of Counselling and Psychotherapy and the author of five previous books.

Preface

This textbook is an introduction to fluid dynamics. The first nine chapters form the basis for the first sophomore level course in fluid dynamics. In addition, Chapters 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13 form the basis for a second course in fluid dynamics. The main prerequisite for the book is a basic knowledge of calculus and physics.

Physical phenomena, and by extension fluid flow, are governed by the same basic laws. Therefore, particular topics can be deduced from the more general framework provided by the laws of nature. For this reason, whenever possible the material in this textbook is presented from a general, deductive viewpoint. This approach is also consistent with the needs of modern engineering analysis and design, and is achieved without sacrificing the quality or quantity of the discussion of "classical" fluid flow phenomena.

Traditionally, students consider fluid dynamics to be a difficult topic because of its mathematical nature and the apparent complexity of its concepts. Often, whether in class or textbooks, the material is presented as a collection of seemingly unrelated concepts, thus making it more difficult for students to fully comprehend the material. Here, the material is organized in a manner that avoids this confusion; similar themes are grouped and discussed together.

Some of the unique features of this book include (a) the point of view of the presentation, (b) the thematic organization of the material, and (c) the introduction of ideas from computational and experimental fluid dynamics. The material and concepts are demonstrated and reinforced through examples and problems for each section and chapter.

Since most concepts in fluid dynamics are quite mathematical, one of the appendixes reviews the basic mathematics required for the study of fluid dynamics. In my experience, this chapter prepares students for the more mathematically rigorous parts of the material.

The book is divided into three parts: Theory

The material in this part is divided into the following categories: (a) introduction, (b) conservation laws (c) fluid kinematics, and (d) fluid dynamics (for finite and differential control volumes). Since the material is presented from a general point of view, in which the universality of the laws of nature is stressed, Hydrostatics is not discussed in a separate chapter but is presented as a special case of the momentum equation in Chapter 2.

Irrespective of the driving forces or dynamic conditions that induce flow, the motion and deformation of fluid particles are characterized by simple kinematic principles. Therefore, in Chapter 4, fluid flow is defined using purely kinematic arguments without reference to the dynamic effects.

Following the kinematics of fluid flow, Chapter 5 introduces and emphasizes the governing laws and constitutive relations. The concept of the constitutive behavior of fluids and therefore of the viscosity of fluids follows naturally from the discussion. Concepts such as laminar flow, turbulent flow, and non-Newtonian fluids are also presented within this framework. An entirely new section on boundary conditions completes the theoretical description of fluid systems. Analysis

Following the theoretical and mathematical description of fluid systems, this part deals with the analysis of fluid problems. This step is also consistent with engineering design methodology. In Chapters 6, 7, and 8 and in Chapters 12 and 13, various solution procedures such as dimensionless analysis, analytic, experimental, and numerical solutions are introduced and applied to fundamental problems. Traditional concepts such as internal and external flows are presented in a separate chapter under a common theme dealing with the use of combined analytical and experimental methods in fluid dynamics. Special Topics

Finally, special topics such as ideal, inviscid flow, compressible flow, and dynamics of rotating fluids are reserved for separate chapters. This avoids unnecessary confusion about the relation of these topics to the fundamental theory of fluid dynamics. Instructors can select, at will, the topics to cover in their course.

About the Author

ANDREAS ALEXANDROU is currently a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Director of the Semisolid Metal Processing Center. He received the B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering (1982) from the American University of Beirut while on a U.S. AID/Fullbright scholarship. At the University of Michigan he earned the M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering (1983) and Civil Engineering (1985), and the Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering (1986). His research interests and contributions are in basic fluid flows, fluid mechanic applications in material processing, and microgravity and wake flows. He has well over 70 scientific publications and numerous presentations to his credit, and has co-authored an advanced textbook on viscous fluid flow. He received the 1992 WPI Board of Trustee's Award for Outstanding Teaching, the 1993 Morgan Distinguished Instructorship Award, and the 1996 Russell M. Searle Teacher of the Year Award in Mechanical Engineering.

A very good introduction to fluids

The clarity of the writing and the step by step progression from general conservation laws, to integral and differential equations, to solvable problems, make this a great introduction to fluid mechanics for physicists and engineers. In addition to learning about fluids the reader will get lots of practice analyzing problems and applying mathematics that they have "learned" elsewhere. If you didn't learn it then, you will have to figure it out now, but luckily this material is exactly the kind of stuff you need to connect those abstract mathematical skills to the real world.
The first printing of this first edition, has too many errors, but most of them have obvious corrections. Hopefully, later printings will correct most of these.
I just asked the students in my class for which this is the text and they all agreed that they like the text, really liked the example problems and were sometimes confused by things that later turn out to be misprints.

Knock-off book printed in black & white on low grade paper.

My rating refers to the quality of the item delivered, not the content of the textbook itself, read on for details.

I ordered this book through Amazon.com, LLC hoping to avoid the many low quality counterfeit textbooks shipped by many third party sellers. When I opened the box, the packing slip said "Principles of Fluid Mechanics, [Hardcover]" but the textbook was just what I wanted to avoid. The cover was flimsy paper, the entire content of the textbook was printed in black and white on what looked like extremely cheap recycled paper.

I thought it had to be an error, so I called Amazon and requested an exchange. Lo and behold, the replacement item was the exact same low quality item. I ended up paying $50 LESS to get an actual hardcover from a third party seller on the site. I hope Amazon.com, LLC will look into their supplier and fix the issue soon. Until then, they are charging $150 for a product that is NOT as described.

Great for Students and People Interested in the Law

This is a wonderful book for both students and people interested in family law. It covers everything from the history of family law to current events, such as Roseanne and Tom Arnold's marriage. The cases are more like soap operas than the dry cases one usually associates with law. These cases will inspire great conversation in the classroom and will hold the students' interest from start to finish.

Valuable resource!

As a student who wants to work for agencies to prevent crime on the internet, I wasn't sure how much "Family Law and Practice: The Paralegal's Guide" was going to do for me. It turned out to be an incredible resource, not only of how the system works, but also of the workings of families in suboptimal conditions.
I could have done without the "Figures," which were mostly illustrations and seldom court forms; but on the whole, the book was well-written and obviously well-researched.
This book seems to portray very realistically family breakdown AND how the attorney and paralegal fit in. If "Family Law and Practice: The Paralegal's Guide" isn't a part of every business school's paralegal program, it should be. I got a LOT out of the course, and might not have if it hadn't been for the wonderful text.

This tome, the second volume of Core Java 1.1, Sun Microsystems' endorsed guide to Java programming, provides coverage of advanced Java topics that you won't find discussed anywhere else, including excellent material on Java network programming. The excellent excerpts of working code will also help you solve a wide variety of real-world problems that turn up in everyday development.

The authors open with a presentation of Java streams, a topic that often gets short shrift because Java security normally preempts file access within browsers. Yet streams are important to Java and are used throughout many of its classes. Serialization of objects is presented in detail so that you can create persistent objects. The internals of object serialization are discussed, including the problems of reloading objects at a later time.

Threading and multitasking are, of course, familiar to all competent Java programmers, but Core Java 1.1: Volume II goes further and discusses some of the pitfalls of synchronizing threads. The authors explain how monitors work in Java to allow threads to synchronize access to memory and other resources. They also show how to use timers, which make use of threads, to provide extra help with threading.

Perhaps the most important material is the discussion of Java's networking abilities, from its built-in support for sockets and URLs to its ability to access higher-level Internet services like HTTP and Gopher. The explosion in Java networking software makes more sense when you see that Java's powerful classes make basic Internet development quite simple--far simpler than if you are using C++. (Java networking also gives you a chance to make use of Java streams in another context.) The authors even show how to invoke Common Gateway Interface (CGI) scripts from within Java using a nifty code excerpt that's remarkably simple but not at all obvious.

The introductions to Java Database Connectivity (JDBC), Remote Method Invocation (RMI), and CORBA are well-crafted. More unusual is the material on working with images in the Abstract Window Toolkit (AWT). This section includes coverage of the creation of image filters, how to work in memory buffers instead of on-screen, and how to copy image data to the system clipboard for use by other programs.

Core Java 1.1: Volume II also includes an immense chapter on the details of the JavaBeans component model. Because today's Java tools still don't support automatic bean creation, it definitely pays to look at this material. Final chapters on security (including Java code signing), internationalization, and native code (with simple examples that use the Java Native Interface [JNI] to invoke C/C++ code) make this tutorial even more comprehensive. In short, it's a book filled with useful information for any working Java programmer that, depending on the project, could save you hours and hours of trial-and-error experimentation.

The book you have in your hands is the second part of the third edition of Core Java. The first edition appeared in early 1996, the second in late 1996. The first two editions appeared in a single volume, but the second edition was already 150 pages longer than the first, which was itself not a thin book. When we sat down to work on the third edition, it became clear to us that a one-volume treatment of all the features of Java that a serious programmer needs to know was no longer possible. Hence, we decided to break up the third edition into two volumes; the second volume is what you are looking at.

The first volume covered the essential features of the language; this volume covers the advanced topics that a Java programmer will need to know so that he or she will (we hope) be in a position to do commercial Java development. Thus, as with the first volume and the previous editions of this book, we still are targeting programmers who want to put Java to work on real projects.

Please note: If you are an experienced Java developer who is comfortable with the new event model and the other language features, such as inner classes, that were added to Java 1.1, you need not have read the first volume in order to benefit from this volume. (While we do refer to sections of the previous volume when appropriate and, of course, hope you will buy or have bought Volume 1, you can find the needed background material in any comprehensive introductory Java 1.1 book.)

Finally, when any book is being written, errors and inaccuracies are inevitable. We would very much like to hear about them. Of course, we would prefer to hear about them only once. For this reason, we have put up a Web page at horstmann with an FAQ, bug fixes, and workarounds. Strategically placed at the end of the Web page (to encourage you to read the previous reports) is a Java applet that you can use to report bugs or problems and to send suggestions for improvements to future editions.

About This Book

First, except for Chapter 1, which is a thorough discussion of input and output in Java 1.1, the remaining chapters in this book can almost certainly be read independently of each other-only occasional backtracking will be needed at most. We suggest reading Chapter 1 first and then turning to whatever topic interests you the most in the remaining chapters. Here are short descriptions of the various chapters.

Input/output in Java is handled through what Java calls streams, which are conceptually the same as the similarly named feature of C++. Streams let you deal in a uniform manner with the large number of possible ways of getting input from any source of data that can send out a sequence of bytes and then sending it to any destination that can also work with a sequence of bytes. In particular, we include detailed coverage of the new Reader and Writer classes in Java 1.1, which make it easy to deal with Unicode; and we include the new object serialization mechanism in Java 1.1, which makes saving the state of an object almost trivial.

Chapter 2 covers multithreading, which enables you to program tasks to be done in parallel. (A thread is a flow of control within a program.) We show you how to set up threads and how to make sure none of them get stuck. We put this knowledge to practical use by example, showing you the techniques needed to build timers and animations.

Chapter 3 covers one of the most exciting APIs in Java: the one for networking. Java makes it phenomenally easy to do sophisticated network programming. Not only do we cover this API in depth, we also discuss the important consequences of the applet security model for network programming.

Chapter 4 covers the JDBC, the Java database connectivity API. We show you how to write useful programs to handle realistic databases, using a core subset of the JDBC API. Please note that this is not a complete treatment of everything you can do with the rich JDBC API. (A complete treatment of the JDBC API would certainly require a book almost as long as this one. )

Chapter 5 covers remote objects and Remote Method Invocation (RMI). This API lets you work with Java objects that are distributed over a net or running in separate processes on a single machine. We also show you where the rallying cry of "objects everywhere" can realistically be used.

Chapter 6 covers some advanced features of the Abstract Windowing Toolkit (AWT) that seemed too specialized for coverage in Volume 1 but are, nonetheless, techniques that should be part of every Java programmer's toolkit. These features include the image manipulation API and the (partially implemented) cut-and-paste API. We actually take the cut-and-paste API one step further than JavaSoft itself did: We show you how to cut and paste Java objects between different Java programs via the system clipboard.

Chapter 7 shows you what you need to know about the new component API for Java-JavaBeans_. We show you what you need to know in order to write your own Java beans. (We do not cover the various builder environments that are designed to manipulate beans, however.) The JavaBeans_ component technology is an extraordinarily important technology for the eventual success of Java because it can potentially bring the same ease of use to Java programming environments that ActiveX_ controls give to the millions of Visual Basic_ programmers out there. Of course, since these components are written in Java, they have the advantage over ActiveX controls in that they are immediately cross-platform and immediately capable of fitting into the sophisticated security model of Java.

In fact, Chapter 8 takes up that security model. Java was designed from the ground up to be secure, and this chapter takes you under the hood to see how this design is implemented. We show you how to write your own class loaders and security managers for special-purpose applications. Then, we take up the new security API that allows for such important features as signed classes.

Chapter 9 discusses a specialized feature that we feel can only grow in importance: internationalization. Java is one of the few languages designed from the start to handle Unicode. As a result, you can internationalize Java applications so that they not only cross platforms but cross country boundaries as well. For example, we show you how to write a retirement calculator applet that uses either English, German, or Chinese-depending on the locale of the browser.

Chapter 10 takes up native methods, which let you call methods written for a specific machine such as the Windows API. Obviously, this feature is controversial: Use native methods, and the cross-platform nature of Java vanishes. Nonetheless, every serious programmer writing Java applications for specific platforms needs to know these techniques. There will be times when you need to turn to the operating system's API for your target platform when you are writing a serious application. We illustrate this by showing you how to access the registry functions in Windows.

Appendix I contains instructions for installing the software and example code from the CD-ROM.
Conventions
As is common in many computer books, we use courier type to represent computer code. There are many C++ notes that explain the difference between Java and this language. You can skip over them if you aren't interested in C++.

Notes are tagged with a "notepad" icon that looks like this. Java comes with a large programming library or Application Programming Interface (API). When using an API call for the first time, we add a short summary description, tagged with an API icon. These descriptions are a bit more informal, but also a little more informative than those in the official on-line API documentation.

Programs whose source code is on the CD-ROM are listed as examples, for instance, Example 15-8: WarehouseServer.java refers to the corresponding code on the CD-ROM.

Pretty good

I bought this book with the intention of providing some in-depth Java information for new guys starting on our project, and it looks like it will do the job. I would say it is most useful for people who know lots of C/C++ and have done a little Java, and now they want to get into networking or RMI or something like that. On the other hand, I am a pretty experienced Java programmer, and it taught me a few things.
My favourite section was the one on image producers, consumers and filters. All of the other topics are covered in quite a lot of detail. For example, there is code showing you how to access a CGI script from a Java client, and details on Java serialisation. I think no matter how experienced and hard-core you are, you won't be offended by the content of this book, and you will learn something.
I only gave it 4 stars because it takes 600+ pages to explain about twice as much as Java in a Nutshell does in 100 pages, and I spent a lot of time flicking over long listings. Despite the verbosity though, the content is all there and easy to read. I'd definitely recommend this book for the project library.

Poorly written English, & Code examples are uncommented.

As an introducton to Java programming, this book is lacking in 3 important categories:
1) The sample code is largely uncommented.
When a beginner reads through a sample program, s/he should
see as many comments (notes to the reader) as possible.
For example, "This method is a part of the standard JAVA library; its options are ....",
or "This method is a creation of the authors.
It's fully explained in chapter [],
and contained on the CD that accompanies the book."
or simply "This method / variable does [thus'n'such job] within the program."
2) These authors thoroughly understand their subject,
but are not expert writers. Too often, their grammar
is too convoluted to effectively communicate the authors'
message. Strunk & White (Authors of "Elements of Style")
are no doubt spinning in their graves.
3) The blurb says that this is a serious book,
for serious programmers, and devoid of "toy programs".
At first glance, this sounds like a good thing.
However, please remember that WIT means both INTELLIGENCE
*and* HUMOR. Other programming tutorials (by other
authors) often included humor as a way to retain the readers' interest. Humor is an effective way to
retain readers' interest, without sacrificing the concrete
value of the lessons' contents.
THIS book, however, lacks any entertainment value along
the long road to understanding Java. Therefore, if you
choose THIS book, then expect that your attention will
often wander. This book will kill your interest.
This book is comprehensive and written by competent programmers, but it aims high over the heads of casual programmers, and *fails* to deliver a comprehensible and enjoyable tutorial/introduction to JAVA programming.
There ARE comprehensible, well written, and enjoyable tutorials about JAVA... go get 'em !

I recommend strongly to buy this book. It covers perfectly the majority of advanced stuff in Java. It's really well written, accurate and rich. It will allow you to feel the power of Java repecting Networking, Object distribution, Beans, Data connectivity, Wrapping, and so on. After reading this book you will feel Java as a real programming tools as C++, and other. So much advanced concepts within just one book, I never saw that ...

Good beginning ESL text

This is one of four books in a series of beginning texts for ESL. It is clearly presented and easy for the students to understand and use. The emphasis is on grammar and vocabulary taught through conversation. There is not much in the way of reading, writing, or cultural studies. It is my understanding that this edition is no longer in print and has been replaced by a new and improved Side by Side.

The best of the best

I absolutely LOVE all books by Molinsky. If you follow the methodics offered by the author, the results are the greatest. I have been teaching English for many years, and I went through a lot of textbooks. Molinsky's books are the greatest if you want your students to get the fastest results in speaking and communicating. The books also save time in preparation for the class.

If you homeschool, this collection of lists will take you from K-6 and is a great companion to any curriculum you use. Highlights for me were the phonics example words (perfect spelling lists), story starters and enrichment activities, as well as the greek and latin root words and the lists of suffixes and prefixes. There is so much useful information here, even your children will pick it up and browse through for fun.

During my 18 years of teaching, (everything from Developmental Kindergarten to Freshman Remedial English), this was the most valuable resource book I had. I was able to use this book in any grade level I taught. Great resource book. A must for your collection!!!

It is divided up into many sections which makes referencing easy. It includes any and all information you need to make lesson planning cohesive and reliable. From onomatopeia to vowel sounds, I highly recommend this book. It is worth every penny!!!

Discovering Arguments: An Introduction to Critical Thinking and Writing; with Readings encourages you to discover the critical powers of your mind. By "thinking" we mean not only analyzing a text but also extending from the text, using it as a springboard for your own interpretation, imagination, and insight.

At the end of the year 2000, the media were full of interviews, articles, and talking heads discussing the candidates, then Governor George Bush of Texas and Vice President Al Gore, and the issues of the presidential election: vouchers for private schools, prescription drugs for the elderly, the future role of the military, gun control, stem-cell research, and so on. Most viewers had simple responses to the arguments: "I agree" or "I disagree." Many responded with analytical statements: "it will never work . . . it will cost too much . . . it benefits only the rich." Some people had more detailed responses: "Why don't we try that program for the medical use of marijuana in a few states to see how well it works?" To argue well, you need to know some history of an issue, but you don't have to be a genius to recognize strategies of argument and persuasion (recognizing similarities and differences for example). Most college students can learn them. Discovering Arguments will help you do this.

We use the terms argue and persuade in their several meanings. One common meaning is "to fight or dispute with words," as in a heated argument on whether same-sex marriages should be legal. Another is "to offer reasons or evidence," as does a lawyer who argues that eyewitnesses can identify an accused. Also, an argument can mean a theory, a philosophy, or hypothesis, as in the argument that "all life is based on self-interest." In composition classes, argument often means writing a paper in which you construct an argument for or against, or both for and against, a thesis by giving reasons, examples, facts, and other evidence.

Discovering Arguments is a book about using your mind, making thoughtful applications of reading, writing, and persuasion. One of the significant differences between Discovering Arguments and other books is our emphasis on audience and persuasive appeals: logos (using reasons), pathos (using emotions), and ethos (using ethics). These appeals offer powerful tools that form the center of thinking, reading, and writing activities in the book. Classroom experience shows that students find this approach useful, and it quickly influences the quality of their thinking and writing.

Except for our collection of logical fallacies (which we call "problems in reasoning"), we have made little use of the premises and conclusions of formal logic; instead, you will discover that there are ample resources for argumentation using informal reasoning. Among these we have included a simplified presentation of philosopher Stephen Toulmin's general theory: most arguments are similar; they make some claim that must be supported by credible evidence.

Writing awakens the mind. It causes you to search for ideas, to construct and analyze thoughts that connect with your audience. Overall, this book values reading and writing for their relationships with thinking. You can view essays, books, newspapers, magazines—any text—as the thoughts of other men sand women reaching out to their readers. Reading and writing are like a conversation between you and your readers: a conversation that awakens your mental powers as you work through details, facts, library materials, probable arguments, contradictions, paradoxes, and the search for truth.

Discovering Arguments incorporates both product and process approaches to learning. As a reader analyzing an essay, poem, or story, you may see a selection as a product—a fusion of thought and form. Or, as a writer working on a report or an argument, you may see your task as a process of planning, composing, and revising. Process approaches help you find subjects that matter to you and to a real audience. Your process approach can assist you with finding information to assemble your thoughts and, eventually, to reach the revision stages, when your thoughts and language skills come together.

THE BOOK IS MULTIFUNCTIONAL

Discoveries Arguments can be used as a rhetoric: it presents a variety of strategies for communicating clearly and persuasively. It can be used as a reader: you will find a variety of papers from our students; published student essays (from Newsweek's "My Turn" column); and essays, articles, poems, and stories by professional writers such as Mitch Albom, Ellen Goodman, Richard Selzer, Thomas Sowell, Deborah Tannen, Martin Luther King Jr., and many others. Although the book contains a few poems and fiction pieces, the majority of the readings are nonfiction. The book can be used as a handbook on research writing: it features comprehensive sections on library strategies, evaluation of evidence, documentation—including electronic sources from the Internet—and detailed guidelines for writing reports as well as persuasive papers using both MLA and APA styles. Finally, Discovering Arguments can be used as a proofreading guide. The Concise Handbook on Grammar, Mechanics, and Usage after the chapters can help you understand and correct the errors that plague many writers. Errors in sentence construction such as fragments; problems with punctuation, capitalization, and other "mechanics"; and usage problems such as the differences between who and whom, lie and lay, and others are explained in brief, simple language.

UNIQUE COMPONENTS OF THE BOOK Active-Discovery Learning

The book is a balance between traditional, deductive teaching, which tells students in advance what they are to learn, and a newer, inductive approach in which students infer for themselves the underlying strategies of composition. In chapter 1, for example, we ask you to write an essay while you read the chapter instead of reading the whole chapter first arid then writing your essay. "What you really learn is what you discover," says writing teacher Ann Berthoff (9). Our goal is to help you discover and apply tools of critical thinking that will benefit you whenever you read and write.

An abundance of pedagogy provides students with a variety of ideas and skills to learn, and instructors with a variety of material to teach. Because there are many ways to think, we have included several strategies to help you respond thoughtfully. Discovering Arguments contains many more activities and assignments than are usually provided in similar books.

Interchapters The interchapters are brief presentations of matters of style and voice. The book provides an interchapter after each of the first five chapters so that learning and practice can begin early in the semester and can be sequenced to correspond with your work as you revise your own writing. You learn tools of style one at a time, discovering patterns of diction, sentences, and punctuation. Our emphasis on the relationship between style and thought offers insights into language as an instrument of persuasion. We present a holistic view of content and style. You learn to excel at what you say as well as how you say it. At the heart of this view is a paradox: how you say something colors what you mean, and what you mean can be clarified by the way you say it. With a minimum of grammatical jargon, the interchapters help you develop an effective style while learning to communicate persuasively. Thinking with Contraries Contradictions, paradoxes, and other forms of reversal offer rich possibilities. Statements such as "love your enemies" or "the indirect is just as real as the direct" stimulate thought. Contraries require exploration and explanation for understanding and, therefore, make an excellent inclusion for careful thinking, reading, and writing. Contraries enable you to discover and to evaluate ideas and information. With contraries you learn to develop a high tolerance for ambiguity and a low tolerance for either/or thinking. You learn ways to use creative thinking skills (such as humor, analogy, and empathy) to complement critical thinking skills (such as analysis, argumentation, and evaluation).

SECTION I: ARGUMENTATION Chapter 1: Communication and Persuasion: Logos, Pathos, Ethos

Chapter 1 introduces the essential skill of observation: noticing details, examples, ideas, problems, arguments, and structures. You learn to use specific, concrete evidence to support your opinions. Chapter 1 presents the appeals of logos, pathos, and ethos used throughout the book as a unifying foundation for persuasive, argumentative writing. The chapter also offers guidelines for finding a subject, creating thesis statements in persuasive essays, and engaging an audience with effective titles, introductions, and conclusions. You learn to read actively by annotating an essay—a skill that helps to evaluate essays. The appeals not only give you tools to communicate persuasively but also to evaluate how well other writers communicate and persuade.

Interchapter 1: Style and Voice

The first interchapter introduces style and voice and related matters of diction and sentence patterns. Activities here help you use effective diction: the effects of monosyllables or multisyllables, and using specific or general, concrete or abstract, literal or figurative words. You learn the effects of precise words, natural writing, and pretentious writing; and you learn the uses of voice—the sound of your writing personality on the page. You learn about objective writing, persuasive writing, and tone—your attitudes toward audience, subject, and self. Interchapter 1 also introduces you to the use of short sentences for emphasis, joining two complete thoughts for coordination, and using semicolons.

Even if you're not a formal student of rhetoric and composition, this book is a useful tool. The ability to construct a persuasive, credible argument is invaluable in today's society. As a former student of Dr. William Palmer, I know his technique is highly effective. This book is the next best thing to the classroom!
