Enjoyable but sometimes unclear

This is one of my favorite books I've covered in my undergraduate degree.

I've noticed several previous reviewers have critisized this book based on clearly false assumptions. Clarification must be done for non-EEs:

This book, along others titled ' Signals and Systems' is intended as a preliminary to the 'systems' part of electrical engineering in general(namely Communications, Signal Processing, and Control). Hence it's not a book on standard DSP (the author has two other books that are specifically entitled Digital Signal Processing and Discrete time signal processing).

What's more, since this book was designed specifically as an introduction for sophomore and junior engineering students, one cannot expect this book to go into lebesgue2 space, inner-products, bounded-operators and the like. Certainly oppenheim didn't have functional analysts in mind when he wrote this book! The mathematically inclined reader should aim for 'Signal Analysis: Time, Frequency ,Scale, and Structure' by Allen and Mills.

As for the typical reader of this book, I think it is well written and the equations are very well motivated. The author repeats the difficult and essential concepts several times here and there, which is very useful for the new comers into the field, although I do agree with reveiwers that said the book needs some adjustments in terms of examples, which are sometimes trivial and sometimes confusing.

I believe the book needs to be updated by the author sometime. The book lacks computer problems and examples, which would be very helpfull for students to visualize what's going on.

I have just used this text in teaching a second-year Signals and Systems course. Yes -- the students have struggled with the course, and several of them have grumbled about the book. However, none of the adverse comments I've received about the book either from my students or other reviewers here seem to be valid. The possible exception is the lack of more worked examples or at least answers to end of chapter problems.
The book is an excellent basic introduction to the subject. It takes what can be a very difficult subject for students and provides a relatively clear path through the material. It doesn't assume very much mathematical background in the sense that there are plenty of very elementary problems in chapter one to remind you of the basics that you need for the rest of the book. Obviously if students have trouble with these problems they need to consider additional study to fill in some of the gaps in their knowledge on the mathematics side.
The worked examples in the chapters are excellent, although sometimes you have to ask yourself what you are supposed to be learning from each example or end of chapter problem. The first 20 problems at the end of each chapter really cover the chapter material, and subsequent problems delve into the material in a little more depth or in relation to more real-world problems. If you understand the chapter you should have no great difficulty in doing the first 20 problems in each chapter, and the answers are provided to help you make sure you aren't missing the point. I found some of the other problems a little less clear, and certainly the students had difficulties here. I provided well over a hundred pages of written solutions for my students to try to overcome this deficiency.
There is a solutions manual, but I don't recommend it all that highly. I found quite a lot of basic mistakes in the solutions manual. Several problems seemed to be done the "wrong way" compared to what I think the intention of the problem is. Also, some of the solutions in the solutions manual don't give enough guidance to students (at least not to the students I had in my course, and most likely not to many others judging by sorts of comments I've read in reviews here). On the other hand, I've probably made similar sorts of mistakes with the solutions I've provided, so I guess I can understand why the solutions manual has these deficiencies.
A few of the end of chapter problems (very, very few) didn't seem to have much point. Some seemed to involve a lot of work, for not much instructive gain. However, the large majority of problems are excellent and highly instructive.
As with all books there are possibly things which could be improved, but overall this book is excellent in terms of being a good basic introductory text for a Signals and Systems course. Such a course is something that many students are going to find difficult, but the book isn't to blame if that's the case.

Skip the Fifth Edition

This book has many of the same homework problems as the fifth edition (which is much more expensive).

If you are NOT required to do MATLAB or programming style questions (which are at the end of the chapter in the fifth edition, so higher numbers), buy this book (this book does not have those problems included).

This book is a great alternative to the fifth edition for a much lower price. All of the problems I have been assigned by my professor who uses the fifth edition are exactly the same in this edition.

About the Author
Michael P. Todaro was Professor of Economics at New York University for eighteen years and Senior Associate at the Population Council for twenty years. He lived and taught in Africa for six years. He appears in Who's Who in Economics and Economists of the Twentieth Century. He is also the author of eight books and more than fifty professional articles. In a special February 2011 centenary edition, the American Economic Review selected Todaro’s article “Migration, Unemployment and Development: A 2-Sector Analysis” (with J. Harris) as one of the twenty most important articles published by that journal during the first one hundred years of its existence.

Stephen C. Smith is Director of the Institute for International Economic Policy and Professor of Economics and International Affairs at George Washington University. He received his PhD in economics from Cornell University. Smith is author of Ending Global Poverty: A Guide to What Works, co-editor of NGOs and the Millennium Development Goals: Citizen Action to Reduce Poverty, and author or coauthor of some three dozen journal articles.

11th EDITION - GREAT BOOK, BUT POOR ANCILLARIES FOR INSTRUCTORS

The 10th Edition of Todaro/Smith was excellent, and was supported by good PowerPoints and Instructor's Manual for professors who adopted it. Then the 11th Edition was revised, updated, rearranged, etc., but inadequate attention was paid to bringing the PowerPoints and Instructor's Manual up to date to comply with the new edition. If you are a professor considering this book for adoption, by all means use it if you don't need the ancillaries to teach your class. It is a great book and gives adequate coverage to any area you'd like to cover. If your teaching style depends on having ancillaries that complement the textbook, I'd give it a second thought. My complaints to the publisher have been responded to with apologies and a vague promise to fix it for the next edition, but this has been, and continues to be, a huge headache.

As economics major, this book is relevant in someway to just about every one of my classes. Economic Development is the nitty, gritty field work of the subject, and this book helps bring that alive for the reader. It is one of the few textbooks I wish I had bought rather than rented.

About the Author

Elliot Aronson

Elliot Aronson is one of the most renowned social psychologists in the world. In 2002 he was chosen as one of the 100 most eminent psychologists of the twentieth century. He is currently Professor Emeritus at the University of California at Santa Cruz and Distinguished Visiting Professor at Stanford University.

Dr. Aronson is the only person in the 110-year history of the American Psychological Association to have received all three of its major awards: for distinguished writing, distinguished teaching, and distinguished research. Many other professional societies have honored his research and teaching as well. These include: the American Association for the Advancement of Science, which gave him its highest honor, the Distinguished Scientific Research award; the American Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, which named him Professor of the Year of 1989; the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues, which awarded him the Gordon Allport prize for his contributions to the reduction of prejudice among racial and ethnic groups. In 1992, he was named a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has served as President of the Western Psychological Association as well as President of the Society of Personality and Social Psychology.

Tim Wilson

Tim Wilson did his undergraduate work at Williams College and Hampshire College and received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. Currently Sherrell J. Aston Professor of Psychology at the University of Virginia, he has published numerous articles in the areas of introspection, attitude change, self-knowledge, and affective forecasting, as well as the recent book, Strangers to Ourselves: Discovering the Adaptive Unconscious. His research has received the support of the National Science Foundation and the National Institute for Mental Health. He has been associate editor of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology and a member of the Social and Groups Processes Review Committee at the National Institute of Mental Health. He has been elected twice to the Executive Board of the Society for Experimental Social Psychology and is a Fellow in the American Psychological Society. Wilson has taught the Introduction to Social Psychology course at the University of Virginia for more than twenty years. He was recently awarded an All University Outstanding Teaching Award.

Robin Akert

Robin Akert graduated summa cum laude from the University of California at Santa Cruz, where she majored in psychology and sociology. She received her Ph.D. in experimental social psychology from Princeton University. She is currently a professor of psychology at Wellesley College, where she was awarded the Pinanski Prize for Excellence in Teaching early in her career. She publishes primarily in the area of nonverbal communication and recently received the AAUW American Fellowship in support of her research. She has taught the social psychology course at Wellesley College every semester for over twenty years.

This text is a little wordy. If you are wondering if you should get the 7th edition or the current edition (8th). There are VERY few differences. Only the case studies in the chapters are different. All other info is the same. Save money and buy the 7th edition.

Sold this book back after my class was over and have wanted to refer to it numerous times since. Finally broke down and bought it again. It talks about how our perception of those around us affects our behavior. So much true stuff!

Instead of feeling like I'm being tossed around by the winds of change I finally feel like I'm anchored within myself. Buy this book, but more importantly read it and do the exercises. All the answers are within you, you just need to ask the right questions. This book played a key role in transitioning me back into a less fearful life, back into feeling whole and able again. Remembering my strengths, understanding my losses, my endings. Turning on my windshield wipers so that my future and my path were more visible and easier to navigate.
I would actively read through each page, stopping to answer questions along the way or to highlight something that spoke to me personally. One of the exercises I valued most was the timeline, referenced as the transitions lifeline. It was a huge eye opener for me, a powerful tool that helped me forgive myself for what I imagined were my failures. What I actually learned was how strong I was to have moved through so many transitions. I kinda think I'm superwoman now. I highly recommend this book.

This is a book that I believe every woman should read. In reading it, and doing the exercises in it, I feel in control of myself, and my life again. We all have the answers, and reading this book will enable you to search yourself and find your own answers. Dr. DiMarco has written a book that is full of information that is relevant to any time period in your life, and has an ease of reading making it very understandable. This is a book I would recommend to any woman who feels like life is slipping between their fingers and that transitions, whether major or minor, are taking control. Moving Through Life Transitions with Power and Purpose will truly change your outlook on life and self esteem. A very good read.

About the Author
David L. Wright was born and raised in New York City and now resides in Southern California. He is the owner of DollarBits.com, a personal finance website. His lifelong avocation of researching investment opportunities and closely monitoring his investment portfolio began when he was in his teens.

During his professional career he worked as a computer programmer, an educator, a corporate executive, and even as an artist. About the Author
Icek Ajzen is the Head of the Division of Personality and Social Psychology at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He received his Ph.D. in Social Psychology from the University of Illinois – Urbana-Champaign, has published numerous books and articles dealing with the attitude-behavior relation, and has been identified as a Highly Cited Researcher in the ISI Web of Knowledge.
Dolores Albarracin, Ph.D. is the R. David Thomas Endowed Legislative Professor of Psychology at the University of Florida. She received Ph.D.s in Social and Clinical Psychology and has been involved in attitudes and health promotion research since 1989. She has edited the "Handbook"" of Attitudes," and received two scientist development awards from NIMH. She has written a solo-authored book and more than 50 journal articles and chapters. She is well known for both her basic and applied contributions, and regularly publishes in the prime journals in the field of psychology.
Robert Hornik is Wilbur Schramm Professor of Communication and Health Policy at the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg School for Communication. Dr. Hornik was Scientific Director for the Evaluation of the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign, and he is the Director of the University of Pennsylvania's NCI funded Center of Excellence in Cancer Communication Research.

Robert L. Heilbroner was Norman Thomas Professor of Economics at the New School for Social Research and author of The Worldly Philosophers and many other books.

Even if you do not agree with the ideas of Fishbein and Ajzen, you must read this book. It explain in a comprehensive way how the theory of reasonable action works and provide a lot of examples of one of the most cited models in social psychology.

This text provides a comprehensive look at embedded microcontrollers—specialized devices used for a variety of applications and which include a memory, a microprocessor, and an I/O interface. Embedded Microcontrollers is one of the first books based on the Motorola MC68HC12. It is for use in any microcontroller course covering embedded systems, or for anyone who wants to design small to medium-sized embedded systems.

From a wealth of practical experience, the author has prepared a work that fills a significant void, both for learning the new MC68HC12 and for learning the fundamentals of embedded real-time applications. For the novice or the experienced, this text provides essential, up-to-date information as well as practical tips—all in a format and style that are engaging and easily understood.

This book is intended for anyone who wants to design small- to medium-sized embedded systems. It was written primarily for electronics engineering technology students, but should also be appropriate for most engineering students and practicing engineers. It is currently being used for two one-quarter courses in electronics engineering technology. The first is a required junior-level course on microprocessor-based applications, and the second is a senior elective course on embedded systems. The first course covers assembly language only, and the second course uses C.

Prerequisites for this book include a background in electronic circuits, basic digital logic, and general C programming. The C programming course is required only for Parts 4 and 5. A background in C and/or C++ is required because this book does not cover C language programming basics. It only addresses the concepts and techniques required for using C in a microcontroller-based embedded system.

SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE USED IN THE BOOK

When writing a book on embedded systems, it is difficult to maintain the balance between being too specific to one hardware/software set and too general to be practical. I have tried to keep this balance by focusing on the concepts, processes, conventions, and techniques used in design and debugging.

The book focuses on the M68HC12 microcontroller from Motorola, but has also been successfully used in courses that use the M68HC 11 family. It is intended to supplement, not replace, vendor documentation. I expect every student to have the complete vendor documentation for both the MCU and the development board he or she is using. For example, for the M68HC12 MCU the student should have the CPU12 Reference Manual and the Technical Specifications for the specific part. If the M68HC 11 is used, the famous "pink books" are a requirement.

The development hardware used throughout the text is the Motorola 68HC912B32 EVB. In the first part of the text, only a single board is required, and all code is loaded into RAM. In the second half of the book, the background debug system is used, and the code is loaded into the target Flash ROM. This requires either two EVBs or one EVB as a target and a 68HC12 BDM pod such as the Noral 68HC 12 BDM debugger. The concepts regarding the debug process and testing should apply to most modern development systems.

The development software used throughout is the Introl-CODE development system. Except for the sections that specifically address development using the Introl-CODE system, the C code is all ANSI-C, and therefore it would be reasonable to use another compiler.

The real-time kernel covered in this text is MicroC/OS-II. It is available in source form and is widely used. Many of the concepts apply to other kernels, especially the applications for typical kernel services.

CHAPTER DESCRIPTIONS

The book is divided into five parts. The first half of the book emphasizes assembly code and the second half focuses on C. Hardware is covered throughout the text, especially in Part 3. Because of the use of pseudo-C from Chapter 6 on, it is reasonable to cover that material with an emphasis on C instead of assembly.

Part 1 Introduction. This part introduces the reader to the background and perspective required in learning about embedded systems.

Part 2 Assembly Language Programming. This part introduces programming in assembly language and covers the CPU 12 programming model and program design. Students should be able to build a prewritten program after completing Chapter 3, and write complete programs that are executed by the D-Bug 12 monitor in RAM after completing Chapter 6. Chapter 7 covers some basic applications that are appropriate for assembly code.

Part 3 Microcontroller Hardware and I/O. Real-time concepts and 1/O hardware are introduced, including interrupts and basic multitasking. All of the 68HC912B321/O resources are covered with the exception of the BDLC. MCU configuration for stand-alone systems along with bus expansion are covered in Chapters 10 and 11.

Part 4 Programming Microcontrollers in C. Concepts in C for programming real-time embedded systems are covered. Emphasis is placed on memory usage and program efficiency appropriate for small MCUs.

Part 5 Real-Time Multitasking Kernels. In this part basic multitasking design is covered along with using MicroC/OS-II, an off-the-shelf kernel.

This book is an good introduction to a broad range of topics and as with most books on embedded systems programming the examples are oriented to a particular CPU - frustrating if it's not the one youre using. Note: 'five star' reviewer Jean J. Labrosse WROTE the UC/OSII operating system featured in this overly expensive book. Try instead "The Art Of Designing Embedded Systems" by Ganssle...

I used this book for a beginner 68HC12 class at my college and I thought it was extremely hard to understand. Most of the examples involve C programming and at the time I hadn't taken a course on C so I didn't know what it was talking about. I think motorola has a lot of useful books if you want to program using assembly language. They have a small black book that goes over all the instructions and then also another book that goes over all the registers. I also beleive this book is wickedly expensive.

Outstanding book on embedded systems

"Embedded Microcontrollers" is an outstanding book for anyone who whishes to understand the inner workings of embedded systems. This book covers both software and hardware aspects and Mr. Morton does an excellent job in presenting the material with ample illustrations, tables, timing diagrams, schematics and lots of practical code examples. This book will certainly become a favorite in Colleges and Universities. If you're into embedded system design, you need this book on your bookshelf!
